2020 Yamaha R1 and R1M overview | A superbike for the masses

Visordown takes a closer look at what’s new and improved on Yamaha's flagship superbikes; The 2020 YZF R1 & limited edition R1M.

2020 Yamaha YZF-R1M

At the time of writing, Yamaha’s 2020 R1 and R1M are being thrashed around Spain by Visordown’s Toad... the lucky git. Jealousy aside, what’s actually been changed and improved on the new R1?

Well, besides a fairly subtle front fairing profile change to match that of the M1 MotoGP bike, you’d be hard-pressed to figure out what’s different on this new R1 compared to the 2015 model. It shares the same chassis and powerplant, but under the skin, Yamaha has modified the 200bhp 998cc 4-cylinder cross plane crank engine to have a more potent top end right up to the13,500rpm redline. And despite the gains, it’s still EURO 5 compliant.

It’s fair to say that Yamaha has perfected and built upon the already exceptional 2015 machine, making subtle but important tweaks to form the R1 into a road-going superbike for the masses.

Here’s an overview exactly what they’ve improved:
