KAWASAKI has announced the 2021 KX250 motocross bike, featuring more power than the outgoing model, revised frame geometry, and a host of updates to help riders take the top step of the podium.
Kawasaki ZZR1400 first ride impressions
With a linage that stretches back over 40 years, the KX brand of motocross machines has always been the standout bikes in the off-road racing world. Designed from the ground up to continue that tradition, the latest version of the Kawasaki KX250 can now deliver even greater power and an even higher rev limit, plus electric start and a hydraulic clutch.
The big news for racers will be the 1.3hp increase in the engine’s output, thanks in part to development from the Kawasaki World Superbike engineers. The bike features finger-follower valve actuation, allowing it to run a higher rev-limit and also a more aggressive cam profile. The exhaust ports have also been redesigned, increasing in diameter, and also changing their angle to help smooth out the flow of gases and increase the power. The combustion chamber has also been revised and features a flatter piston crown, another factor in increasing the performance.
Mechanical loss within the engine has also been reduced, thanks to 3mm longer conrods, revised crankshaft design, and improved pressure balance within the crankcase. Another positive engine change is the switch to a hydraulic clutch, improving the feel at the lever and decreasing fatigue in long races.
Kawasaki KX250 launch control
Launch control system is designed to the same specifications as that of our AMA factory racers. With the simple press of a button, riders can activate a separate engine map designed to ensure efficient race starts in low-traction conditions. (The Launch Control Mode map retards ignition timing, allowing tyres to gain grip, and allowing riders to focus on their lines.)
