The 2020 Yamaha YZF-R1 and YZF-R1M ranges break cover for the first time

Yamaha R1 2020

YAMAHA has pulled the wraps off its updated Yamaha YZF-R1 and Yamaha YZF-R1M ranges as it prepares to go back into battle for Superbike superiority with a fresh look and more power for 2020.

The newest take on the modern R1 line that begun in 2009 with the introduction of the new Crossplane engine configuration, Yamaha has kept the R1 fresh with various nips and tucks over the years, but the 2020 tweaks are the most significant all-round since its 2015 update.

Yamaha MT 09 2019 Review

Drawing upon inspiration from Valentino Rossi’s  M1 MotoGP machine, the R1 doesn’t appear to stray far from Yamaha’s sporty-orientated design language, but does refresh the aesthetics with a taller central cowl and nose arrangement alongside its familiar, LED-enhanced dual headlight set-up..

With new colour-matching farings giving the R1 more of a premium profile, the tweaks offer multiple benefits in terms of efficiency and aerodynamics, as much as 5% according to Yamaha.

Under the skin, the YZF-R1 packs a 200HP, 998cc 4-cylinder unit has been tweaked to strike the right balance between sportiness and refinement, raising the RPM performnace to deliver maximum power at 13,500rpm but still meet EU5 emissions regulations.

New-for-2020 is the ride-by-wire throttle to improve control, with APSG (Accelerator Position Sensor Grip) which uses magnets and sensors to increase feel and improve interaction with the bike, and Brake Control system which allows riders to select one of two ABS modes – BC1 and BC2 – depending on sensitivity levels and corner braking.
