High-speed accidents involvingTop Gear presenters is nothing new but current host Freddie Flintoff ‘enjoyed’ a first this week after it was revealed he crashed at more than 120mphaboard a high-powered Time Bandit Trike.

The cricketer-turned-presenter was busy filming for the upcoming 28th series when he reportedly ran out of runaway at Elvington Airfield aboard a three-wheeler, causing the crash.

"I'm absolutely fine and was back filming today," Flintoff said in a statement. "I go to great lengths to make sure I do well in Top Gear drag races but on this occasion I went a few lengths too far.

"It will look more ridiculous than dangerous when you see it on TV."

Freddie Flintoff accidents has echoes of Richard Hammond accident

Despite Flintoff’s attempts to play down the accident, it does nevertheless echo the serious accident that almost claimed the life of his Top Gear presenting predecessor Richard Hammond, who was injured after crashing a jet-powered car at almost 300mph.

"As viewers of the recent series will have seen, Freddie is often keen to get 'off the beaten track'," the BBC added.

"Tuesday's filming at Elvington Airfield was no exception – but he suffered no injuries as a result of his spontaneous detour, as fans will see for themselves when we show the sequence in full in the next series."

They aren’t the only presenters to come unstuck during filming. Fifth Gear presenter Jason Plato suffered burns whilst testing a Caparo T1 supercar after it ‘spontaneously erupted into a ball of flame’.
