OFF-ROAD legend and On Any Sunday star Malcolm Smith has been injured in a golf buggy incident at a California golf course.
According to a local news outlet, the 77-year-old was enjoying a round of golf last Friday, January 25th with a friend at the Furnace Creek Golf Course in Death Valley.
As Smith walked behind the golf buggy, his friend accidentally put the vehicle into reverse instead of drive and accelerated backwards, hitting Smith and knocking him to the ground. An ambulance rushed Smith to Desert View Hospital in Pahrump, Nevada, where he is reportedly being treated for ‘major injuries’.
Smith made his name in the sixties and seventies, winning eight golds in just ten years at the International Six Day Trial event. Later, he took six wins at the Baja 1000 (three on a motorcycle and three in a car), four at the Baja 500 and two at Nevada’s Mint 400. In Africa, he twice won the Roof of Africa Rallye, competed in the Paris Dakar Rally twice and won Morocco’s Atlas Rallye.
The legendary racer appeared in a number of motorcycle films, including the Academy Award-nominated On Any Sunday alongside Steve McQueen.
He was inducted into the Off-road Motorsports Hall of Fame in 1978, the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in 1996 and the Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 1998.
