Grand Prix

Jorge Martin took a dominant first full-length race victory of the 2024 MotoGP season in the Portuguese Grand Prix, as he took the championship lead for the first time since last October.

Martin’s race was a clinical display of how to win a MotoGP race in 2024: take the lead early, avoid mistakes, and enjoy an appropriately pressured front tyre. Martin made the holeshot, led every lap, and took a commanding win, in almost identical fashion to how Francesco Bagnaia won the Qatar Grand Prix.

For Bagnaia’s part, it was his worst Grand Prix performance since Valencia 2022, when he was managing an almost certain title victory. He was fourth for the majority of the race, was passed by Pedro Acosta in the final 10 laps, and then crashed trying to rebuff a Marc Marquez pass with three laps to go. It would have been Bagnaia’s first non-podium finish in a dry Grand Prix since that 2022 Valencia race - instead, it was his first DNF since India. Marquez remounted for 16th.

Behind Martin it was Maverick Vinales in second place for the whole race, until the final lap when he ran wide at the first corner and crashed on a bump in the run-off area. Vinales had lost second place to Bastianini already on the pit straight, possibly in a moment of confusion over the number of laps remaining.

Bastianini inherited second place from Vinales in a positive moment for his chances of maintaining his position in the factory Ducati team in 2025, and he finished ahead of Pedro Acosta, whose third place marked his first MotoGP podium in just his second race. Not only that, but Acosta spent almost the whole race between Marc Marquez and Francesco Bagnaia, and therefore no doubt learned a lot about how to race in MotoGP.

Behind Acosta were the two factory KTMs of Brad Binder in fourth and Jack Miller in fifth, the latter probably looking up the road at the rookie set to replace him in eight months.

Marco Bezzecchi was sixth, ahead of Fabio Quartararo - the best-placed Yamaha and Japanese bike in seventh - while Aleix Espargaro took eighth place ahead of Miguel Oliveira in ninth, and Fabio Di Giannantonio who rounded out the top 10.

Sprint

Maverick Vinales took a surprise win in the MotoGP Portuguese Sprint, his first race win for Aprilia after a mistake from Francesco Bagnaia gifted him the lead.

Bagnaia looked in perfect control of the race, until he made a mistake at turn one on lap nine. In braking, he lost the rear and had to release the brake, which sent him into the run-off area and from the lead to fourth. From there, instead of charging forwards towards the podium, Bagnaia resigned himself to fourth, where he finished ahead of his old teammate, Jack Miller in fifth, and his current teammate, Enea Bastianini in sixth.

In Bagnaia’s absence from the lead, Vinales took control of the race, batted away pressure placed upon him by Jorge Martin, and eventually won by one second.

After Bagnaia’s mistake, it seemed inevitable that Martin would win, such is his riding aggression compared to that of Vinales. But a mistake from Martin at turn 13 on the penultimate lap gave Vinales that one-second buffer, and instead put Martin in position to be passed by Marc Marquez.

This was a pass made at turn five on the final lap, an aggressive move signalling Marquez’ growing confidence with the Desmosedici GP23, particularly its front end. Martin was unable to respond to Marquez, and finished third.

Bagnaia, sensing that he somewhat got away with one at turn one, settled for fourth and maintained his championship lead by finishing ahead of Miller, while Bastianini was sixth. Pedro Acosta impressed again in seventh place, ahead of Aleix Espargaro whose race was ruined by his 13th-place qualifying, while Fabio Quartararo took the final point in ninth for Yamaha. Raul Fernandez completed the top 10.

Qualifying

Pole position at the MotoGP Portuguese Grand Prix went the way of Enea Bastianini, who was one of only two top contenders to maximise their potential in Q2 to take his first pole for the factory Ducati team.

The other was Maverick Vinales, the Aprilia rider finishing qualifying in second place despite picking up an illness over the weekend, much to the delight of the Noale brand whose more consistent performer, Aleix Espargaro, qualified down in 13th after being the fastest rider to miss out on Q2.

The front row in Portugal is completed by Jorge Martin, who lost most of his time in the first sector. His first flying lap put him provisionally second, but that was cancelled for track limits in the final corner, before his fastest lap on the second run put him on provisional pole before Bastianini and then Vinales usurped him.

Francesco Bagnaia was another rider to seemingly miss a little bit in qualifying. His fastest lap of Q2 came on the third lap of his second tyre, by which time it would have been past its best. This apparent error in execution by Bagnaia cost him the front row with Vinales late lap. The World Champion is still without a top three qualifying in 2024.

Jack Miller qualified fifth, but a better performance in the final sector could have gotten him to the front row. He starts just ahead of sixth-placed Marco Bezzecchi, who has seemingly improved compared to Qatar.

Pedro Acosta came through Q1 to qualify seventh and as the second-fastest KTM rider on his first visit as a MotoGP rider to Portimao - a circuit where he has gone unbeaten in Moto3 and Moto2.

Marc Marquez took eighth place, but could have fought for the front row without a crash in the final corner on his first flying lap. Marquez has spoken this year about adapting his riding style from that which suited the Honda RC213V to that which suits the Ducati Desmosedici GP, and the difficulty in maintaining that adapted style in high-pressure situations, such as qualifying or in an on-track battle. Perhaps this qualifying crash was symptomatic of that ongoing struggle to adapt to the Desmosedici.

Fabio Quartararo was the best Yamaha in ninth place, ahead of Brad Binder - another crasher on his first flying lap - who took 10th place. Alex Rins was 11th and the last rider to set a time, as Alex Marquez qualified 12th without setting a valid lap having come through Q1 with Acosta.

Friday Practice

Friday in Portimao for MotoGP was certainly a day of two halves. The first was dominated by conditions, as overnight rain flooded the circuit with not only water (which had mostly evaporated by the time practice began) but also dirt.

As a result, while Marc Marquez’ first position in FP1 was encouraging for the Gresini Ducati rider, it was also fairly meaningless, as the afternoon was much faster.

Of course, that is the way most riders would have preferred it, because the afternoon Practice session is the only one that counts for qualifying seeding on Saturday.

As it turned out, Practice only went slightly worse for Marquez than FP1, as he finished third-fastest despite a crash in his final time attack run, which felt like the first time we’ve really seen Marquez look for the limit on the Desmosedici.

Ahead of him was Jack Miller in second place for KTM, while Enea Bastianini was fastest overall.

Jorge Martin, 2024 MotoGP Portuguese Grand Prix. - Gold and Goose
Jorge Martin, 2024 MotoGP Portuguese Grand Prix. - Gold and Goose

Jorge Martin had a fairly quiet day by his standards in fourth place, while Brad Binder was fifth on the second KTM. Marco Bezzecchi had something to be positive about for the first time this season as he finished the day in sixth, ahead of Maverick Vinales on the leading Aprilia in seventh. Francesco Bagnaia missed most of his time in the second and fourth sectors, and finished eighth, ahead of two surprise Q2 entrants: Fabio Quartararo, who was ninth, and Alex Rins, who made the cut in 10th. Like Bezzecchi, Yamaha has its first opportunity to allow itself some positivity in 2024.

That meant that star rookie Pedro Acosta missed out, but far from being intimated by Portimao on his first visit as a premier class rider, Acosta had been fastest on his 11th lap of FP1, and ended the day 11th.
