WE HAD to share this classic video of the 1989 World GP at Phillip Island. Back in the day where the racing was vicious and highsides were a regular first corner feature.

John..

Excellent, now who says that modern racing is all the better with traction control and slipper clutches.

I've got an idea for next year, lets watch re runs of racing on a Sunday starting with the 1989 season.

Excellent idea John, is that so your leathers are in fashion still?

Infact this race was the best race i've ever seen that i bought the VHS video of it at the time from Duke, bet they still flog this as an individual race, also worth a look is the 1988 Frog GP at Paul Ricard.

I told you all back in 2002 that this four stroke racing would be shit, but would you listen, no, you just blindly plodded on regardless, claiming i was a crazy fool and 20,000 rpm four strokes would be ace....eat ya tossing words!!!!!

wavydave

the way i see it is ;imagine being at the top of your game riding in a 500 gp. there you are going like fook and those four guys lap you sooo fast they make your head spin......

i think i'd go sit in the van and cry.

awesome race that.

John..

Ah, the good old days.

Most of the riders nowadays could be male models. I suppose that's what corporate sponsors want/expect.

Lets have a petition to bring back ugly racers.

I was there all those years ago... after bikers being "untouchable" socially after the Bathurst riots..( google it ) Wayne Gardner with his "heart on his sleeve" heroic personality turned riding into something respectable. I still remember with a misty eye crowds lining the streets and cheering as we rode through on the way to that first race @ the Island. Did'nt get that treatment when I went to Donnington

As for the racing? Well these days of traction control & 4 strokes have been blamed for too much. The racing at Phillip Island is still as exciting as in '89 both in MotoGP & WSB. Personally I thing the dumbing down of the tracks is to blame. The top shelf tracks _ Phillip Island, Mugello, Brno, Laguna Seca, Catalunya- turn on top shelf racing. Pity we lost the best of the new tracks- Turkey- and that Assen was completely rodgered (in the Assen).
