Anyone checked if Erik Buell is feeling alright?

We've never seen a new model (not) launched like this

We love different. We love entrepreneurialism. We love maverick. But we're not sure what to make of Erik Buell who has made a living from having a healthy dose of all three.

You may not have heard of the Buell Blast but it was a bike that Buell have been making for 9 years. An entry-level 492cc, single-cylinder four-stroke, with an easy-going 34bhp and 30lbft torque. Low seat height and a relatively light 170kg, so on paper it looks like the ideal learner bike.

However in a damage limitation excercise, Erik Buell has crushed the Blast, quite literally. It seems that Buell were worried about their image suffering because of the Blast, so they've decided to can the model and crush the whole range.

We don't get the Blast over here in the UK, so I haven't ridden one but crushing it seems to me like a funny thing to do. If you're going to crush a bike because it's damaging to your range, why stop at just one in the Buell family? We'd happily vote for the Buell Ulysses as next up for the crusher, the Buell Useless - as it's known by journos - posed about as much threat to the BMW 1200GS as an assassination attempt on Barack Obama using a cheeseburger as your only weapon.

And let's just hope none of Buell's executives join any other manufacturers, or they could end up crushing half of Honda's mid-size fleet. Or indeed crushing the whole Hyosung factory.

Describing the Ulysses as the Useless says a lot more about the journos than it does about the bike.  The terms 'lazy' and 'narrow-minded' come to mind.

 It's fairly obvious that you're still upset over the whole 1776 thing. The Ulysses is one of the most competent and definitely most enjoyable bikes in its class. Seriously, who cares if it poses a threat to the GS. What bike does?

On the crusher thing... Buell's just trying to get some attention with their Blast stunt. Why just quietly discontinue a model when you can get some publicity out of it and at the same time make a statement.

Erik will sure as heck have demolished the re-sale values of any 'Blast's.

It is a betrayal of those who bought into the brand via a 'Blast' and spent good money on servicing and Buell merchandise on the back of it.

As to the 'Ulysses': I used to own one...

While it was far from the best bike I've owned and is no threat to BMW or KTM it was far better than useless.

Just wonder what the free-thinkers who dubbed it 'usless' ride themselves?

But we all have freedom of choice; at least when it comes to choosing a bike!

The 'Ulysses' is not useless.

No It's just not a GS....But doesn't cost GS money and wasn't ridden around the world by R2D2, or anybody else from 'Star Wars'.

As to crushing the 'Blast' : What a betrayal of those who bought into the brand via this route and have spent their money on servicing and 'Buell' merchandise.

I have supported Buell since 95 and Erik has been true to the product and idea for years But now with this new advertizing agency it just seems corprate HD has finally won.  I'd rather be "different" and still be true to myself.

The Blast was what it was, at a time when Buell was trying to bring the brand to the masses.  The Buell brand has a gigantic following now, and with the XB9 class, the need for the Blast just doesn't "need" to exsist anymore.  Erik Buell is making a statement that's all.  He's done with the Blast, so get over it.  Grow a sack and step up to real power and useful range.  As for the Uly...useless?  The Uly?  Have you ever ridden one?  I've ground my pegs with other supposedly "better" Jap bikes, and have taken it Geo Caching on the mining roads in Nevada on the same day, do that with a Ninja or a "Busa".  Useless?  THe Uly out performs the GS on the pavement, and can still get out on the dirt, not as capably as a GS, but hey it does what it is designed for.  The Uly is designed for 80/20 riding, where the GS is more dirt capable, as it was designed for.  You really need to do your research before you bash a product.  Man your research department is staffed by retards and a-holes.  Wow, you guys really are miffed about the whole 1776 thing huh?
