Tail of the Dragon

More curves than the Playboy Mansion

Posted: 27 January 2012
by Tom Higham

Visordown has featured a few blogs on Mullholland Highway in the past, but there's another road in the States that's very popular with bikers, car drivers and unfortunately truckers as well. 11 miles long and with over 300 corners, it's known as the 'Tail of the Dragon'.

Once you get over the cheesy "blood-stained asphalt" voice-over, this is an interesting but short video about the road that's located in North Carolina. Some of the Dragon's sharpest curves have names like Copperhead Corner, Hog Pen Bend, Wheelie Hell, Mud Corner, Beginner's End and Gravity Cavity. It certainly looks a fun stretch of road to ride and is on many Americans bucket list. Just keep an eye out for those 18 wheelers.

Just another twisty road that us Brits would do blindfolded. Clearly the yanks think it's just 'too awesome maaaaan! Just listen to the overblown music. Doesn't even come within 5% of the IOMTT, NW200, Ulster GP and the like. No doubt it's a good road but get real!

A few bends and they're in awe? Road from hell?? Agree with gunshot72, the Yanks would quiver in Scotland or Wales, while in England they'd just fall over with all the Roundabouts and potholes :)

I'm not sure you understand, Deals Gap is dangerous because of the numerous blind corners (of which roundabouts have none) combined with the 18-wheelers that drive in the wrong lane around said blind corners. This creates a pretty effective barrier to slam into and kill yourself.

"IOMTT, NW200, Ulster GP and the like" are sanctioned road racing events and (to the best of my knowledge) are not known for tractor trailers driving on the wrong side of the road. Yes, they are very dangerous but then again the people racing are also professionals (not sure why gunshot72 compared professional racing to weekend getaways for the average joe).

If everyone observed the golden rule that you should be able to stop within the distance you can see, then they wouldn't go hooning into blind bends too fast ,not knowing what is just round the corner.Just a thought......

Gunshot7 ---------------------------------------------------------(Just another twisty road that us Brits would do blindfolded.) (in your dreams)
The rebound of the 'gunshot' must have rattled the few brain cells you have, the only other thing to do is step away from the bottle and sober up. Instead of posting utter rubbish.

gunshot, what the fvck does the IOM TT have to do with riding on normal roads?
Im sure that your average British numpty riding the Cat and Fiddle really thinks he's on the TT you pillock.
