Head down to the Westpoint Arena for the European Stunt Championship
Need something to do on August Bank Holiday weekend, then read below:
"Although the South West Motorcycle Show has been running at the Westpoint Arena for the last sixteen years, 2010 is the first year that the show hosts the all-new Vertical Trix European Stunt Championship.
The show contains all the usual attractions that have been delivered to motorcyclists from over the south-west and further afield since 1994 – including all the appropriate trade stands, and with strong support from local dealers – plus attractions such a a dyno on site, restaurant, bar, bike displays, live music and of course the live action arena. Although the action in the show arena has previously been stunt displays, rather than a full-on competition.
Stunting has moved on in leaps and bounds since the stunt shows of the early Nineties - fast wheelies and lots of tyre smoke are now only a small, albeit essential, part of the spectacle. The feats achieved on one wheel – either the front or the rear - using both, one or, astoundingly, no hands, really have to be seen to be believed! Shredding tyres and engines bouncing off the rev-limiter are now joined by a gymnastic level of athleticism as the riders climb all over their bikes while still maintaining a level of control of throttle, clutch and brake that most of us could only dream of!
With a fat wedge of cash up for grabs (totalling seven thousand pounds split between various categories), the Vertical Trix European Stunt Competition will also see Sartso jeans, Scorpion helmets, HEL brake lines and loads more goodies handed out to those who prove their worth, either in the individual freestyle stunt competition, stoppie or sickest trick competitions or in the stunt soccer (set to be more interesting and far more exciting than the World Cup!). The stunt comp and practice will be interspersed by a drift car session, as supplied by Santa Pod.
With the fat prize fund, the competition has attracted stunt riders from all over Europe – at the time of writing, there are no less than ten riders from France, plus entrants from Poland, Germany and Norway with the British flag being flown by Steve O from Redditch, Mark Van Driel from Suffolk and Lee Bowers from Middlesex, all on Kawasaki ZX-6R machines, Paul Todd from Colchester riding a BMW F800R, Dave Coppock, Andrew Mackay and Armando Garcia, all from Surrey and all on Honda CBR600s, and reigning British stunt champion Paul Hanks, on a Triumph Street Triple, plus Graham Houston and Andy Nisbet travelling down from Scotland to take part.
The Westpoint Arena is just a few minutes from junction 30 of the M5 (follow signs for Sidmouth, after just one mile it’s on your left), and more details can be found at bikeshowseurope.co.uk."
