Starter Courses for kids
I came to Silverstone with no track experience at all other than a bit of minimoto time on kart tracks.
Dad and I entered the reception area to a warm welcome from all the instructors and staff. At that moment I knew I was in good hands. After waiting around for everyone else to arrive we then got told to go the kit room to sort out our leathers, boots, helmets and gloves. After that we had a briefing and then got into a mini bus to go to another centre where all the bikes were.
We waited to be told what instructors we had, I got paired with Rob Hoyles. We went out on track (the massive International circuit) with me not knowing what to do other than change gear, accelerate and brake. For the first 10 minutes I learned about getting the right lines through the corners - just by following Rob. After the 10 minutes were up Rob pulled me in to see if I was happy with the speed and if I wanted to go faster. Obviously, as a 13 year-old all I wanted to do was go faster.
Rob gradually got faster and faster and gave me some tips about my body positioning and told me a lot to make a faster lap. The 40 minutes on track went too fast but there was more to come. On-Track was so much fun with a kind and experienced instructor. You felt like you knew them before you met them (I did – Dad).
We had a quick break and a drink and then went for another briefing because next was a special cone-marked track in a car park. In this area there was a big cone circle and we had to slalom through it and try not to hit any cones or put our feet on the floor. This was very hard but it really helped with my clutch control, throttle and braking. Then Leon Haslam hopped on a 125 and taught us how to square off a corner and how to go in fast and how to use different lines for better corner speed. It was really good fun chasing him round this tight and twisty little circuit. I'm used to watching him on telly, but to ride with him was mega. Ron also taught us how to stop really hard without going over the front.
Dad said at the start of this race school when I came into the pits I didn’t use the clutch as well as after the school had finished. After the morning was over I felt like a young racer all thanks to everyone at the race school. I would do it again and again and again because it was that much fun.
