Is the Honda Big Ruckus cool?

An actual Zoomer - the one Ben likes

I'm happy to admit that I'm a little bit different; I believe that brown is an underused colour in motorcycling and we need to move on from custom café racers and introduce a dustbin fairing craze - you know I'm right.

So, as Ben Cope - known around the Visordown office for being rather stubborn - and I were looking over various scooters on the 'net we uncovered the above machine, Honda's Big Ruckus 250. Instantly I thought that the Big Ruckus was absolutely cool, whereas Ben likened it to a 'mobility scooter'.

The scoot is the big brother to the 50cc Ruckus, better known on these shores as the Zoomer. It was only sold in Japan (where it was called a PS250), USA and Canada.

But what is it that attracts me to this beastly scooter? I guess it's the industrial tubing of the frame and the all-out Japanese oddity of it. Obviously it'd need some work, like tearing off the back-rest/pillion seat but I'm on to a winner.

I think I'm going to be on my own here, so I should probably don some virtual armour to deflect the abuse and flack. Unleash the comments...

I assume the backrest, as you call it folds down as a pillion seat when you need it and its a good sized rack to bungy to when you dont!. It does look like a mobility scooter painted in JCB colours but for a rugged utillitarian vehicle it does get my vote for funky cool. Perhaps it should double-up as a generator!!.

Yeah... I was thinking it must be a joint branding exercise with JCB or Caterpillar... but I don't see either of their logos on there. Looks like they missed a trick. It does look like it is meant to be riding around a construction site though... which seems like an odd choice as surely you'd want something like a quad/trike.

A little bit different? Truck around in that and you'll discover that people can be a "little sarcastic". Looks like something you'd expect to see cruising the isles at WalMart.

There is a 250 available too. Called the PS250. It looks funky, but not for me; too heavy, too underpowered, and as a result NOT cool.

The styling isn't unique either :

In an odd way, yeah it's pretty cool

I have never yet seen a scooter that I thought was cool. This is a scooter. It is however very different from any scooter I have ever seen before, and on first impressions - if I had to ride a scooter, I'd be happy to ride this one. It kind of is cool, yeah!

I thought that one of the basic principles of biking was that it didn't follow boring rules like the majority of the 4-wheel automobile world of being 'safe' with designs - the Ruckus should be celebrated as should all out of the ordinary bike designs - I bet if there was a turbocharged Busa engine in the bike then people would think it was cool

I would ride it looks cool as soon as I saw it I thought it was a zoomer rip off then I read its the bigger version.

The Tokyo-released Yamaha concept 200 is a far more interesting design. The Ruckus is still a low, slow, scooter with the motor as sprung weight.

So it seems that Ben has a deeply rooted hatred for the rugged dual headlights (Read - he's a sore loser).

As Mike F 7 highlighted, Yamaha's Ryuko concept from the Tokyo show is just another cool example of this headlight use:

the honda big rukus is so uncool if it was trying to get on the top gear wall i would shred it...whereas the zoomer has function as well there is space for storage or i think it was for a surf board although with that 50cc power how could it move...

It's as cool as a colostomy bag.

It was kind of Triumph to lend the front lights off the old triple to them.
The petrol version looks better. The battery version looks .like a real handful.
It reminds me of the mini moke. Utilitarian, open and different. The petrol version likely quite quick as well.

Would be pretty swift as a mobility scooter, I reckon.

Half a quad bike without the practical side, uncool.
