. In last year's sales charts, its second year, the S1000RR trounced all but Honda's Fireblade. That's some going. When it was first launched, it caught the opposition more than napping, they were in a deep sleep. I'm sure the established marques were wary

compressed somehow. But it really isn’t so long ago since the best sportsbikes were of 750cc capacity. From the launch of the first GSX-R750 in 1985 to the debut of the first credible large capacity bike – the FireBlade – in ’92, 750cc four-stroke sportsbikes

-R1000, two seconds up on the YZF-R1 and the old ZX-10R, and three seconds quicker than the 2005-model Fireblade, all on standard OE rubber. Impressive stuff - if it's true. How this ZX-10R fares in more objective comparison tests elsewhere remains

sold. Imagine trying to punt off an 11 year-old FireBlade today, you wouldn’t stand a chance. But the Vmax is no ordinary bike.Initially I was genuinely a bit nervous riding the Yamaha. I’ve heard all the stories and imagined that the Vmax would be some

not have the paper stats of a Fireblade/R1/Lite sports bike but ultimately you will go faster unless your on a motorway or your Carl Foggerty. Reassuring overtaking, reassuring in bad conditions. Looks are pugish but beautiful. Reliable and has never gone

braking we did at the Salzburgring but even at lower speeds I was less than impressed with the feel of the brakes. It might just be that bikes such as Ducati's 1098 and Honda's Fireblade have moved the game on another step when it comes to braking
