rolfe66 wrote98 does not support usb 98se does, dont think you can upgrade, im sure you need a clean install, i could be wrong. You can but you need a specific Windows 98SE upgrade disk to got from rev1 to SE. You can't upgrade using a normal 98SE disk unless you do some stuff to the original 98 install although I've forgotten what it is. There are a few other differences - direct X and some other stuff I've also forgotten A fair bit of stuff won't install on / run on 98 Rev1 but will on 98SE.

Are they different?Friend has a camera tthat requires Win 98SE as a minimum and she only has Win 98 as her operating system. The PC does not recognise her camera as a removable drive!!Will not being 98SE make the difference?ThanksHFB
Jack wroteNothing wrong with it used properly I still have a Win95 PC here in full working order and if needed I can get Win 3.11 up and running pretty quickly And everyone (who matters) knows Dos was the first OS that mattered Likewise!HFB, I have a full official MS Windows 98SE install disc if you would like it. PM me if you do.

Back on topic........................... IIRC W98SE PCs I have wouldn't recognise my Pentax camera properly, and required a driver to recognise a USB memory stick. It said as much in the manual I believe and I ended up using a W2000 system to download to a memory stick to transfer them over.
honda fatboy wroteHmmmmm her PC software is 98 but it has and is using 2 USB ports already.Just doesn't seem to recognise the camera as a removable drive.Have tried it on my pc at home (XP home) and worked 1st time, recognised the device and downloaded the pics!!! Removable drives are handled a little differently to regular USB units in W98SE (and in everything else I believe).I THINK the downloadable updates from MS will help here.
I was running W98 on my home desktop, years ago, and was also using the USB ports without any problems. The Sony camera I bought wouldn't work with it at all (drive not being recognised) so I took it back to Dixons. They plugged it into a PC in the shop and it worked first time. They said the machine was running W98 (liars) so I wasn't getting a refund on the camera as the fault must be with my PC. Hidden away in the instructions it said that the camera would only work with W98se and not W98. So that was more money for me to shell out.

From experience i have found that 98/98se makes things up as it goes along as far as USB is concerned...Schools have bought numerous pieces of hardware for me to install on some of their 98 pc's in the past and some have worked and some havn't, even with the usb patches installed and using the driver disk supplied with the hardware 98 still refuses to pick it up...My advise to you would be to either her to get a new pc with XP installed, or to upgrade your pc to XP dependant on the pc's spec...?98 is getting abit 'Oldskool' now...G.
