Zen and the Art... is a great book though. Not what you're after obviously but a huge book. Takes some reading though. It's a exploration of philosophy/quality/insanity/gumption traps written through a bike trip across the US.

I've seen that on Amazon but wasn't too sure - it looked more like a story than a basic maintenance book.I may give it a go - thanks.

Bad Devotions wroteBeing all new to bikes and that and the fact that I will be buying second hand, are there any good books about basic motorcycle maintenance or buying second hand bikes? What to look for, basic terms etc. I am no mechanic so in simplton terms would be good. Book Of Life. Seriously, I learned most of what I know bike-mechanics-wise in the garage with my spanners and trusty oily Haynes manual. Be aware that the *book way* of doing things often only applies if you've got a fully kitted workshop, all the dodges, bodges and shortcuts can be gleaned from the likes of folk in WorkShop on here.

Motorcycle Basics Techbook (Haynes Techbook Series) ~Matthew Coombs, Pete ShoemarkHaynes Publishing Motorcycle Owner's Manual ~Hugo WilsonDorling Kindersley Publishing and a few others on my shelves are worth a look. And the Motorcycle Book by Chilton Publishing is good, but US (harley) biased. Also, read the manual for your own bike, its an underrated gem usually.
