Bizarrely, there may be a small bit of good advice among the countersteering-denialsim. As the OP said, it can require a lot of strength at times to push the bar when countersteering hard. As boxers (and kayakers I believe) know, to get power into your arms you have to power the motion from your hip, which transitions up through the torso and moves the arms with much more power. Just to be clear though - it is the moving of the bars with your arms that is doing the steering, just with more power.
