Good question TinOP. I'm one of those who sit in the middle - track only rider (inters) on a track only bike but don't race. Personally I've done enough track riding now to not be too worried when the quick boys come past close and on the whole the race boys tend to be pretty courteous when on track days. The problem for me is the 'have a go' hero who rolls up on his road K7 with all the gear (ok I have a K6 with all the gear but I digress) thinking he can transpose his semi-quick road riding to the track. He then goes to stuff it under people mid corner, take crazy lines and miss any apex going. These unpredictable clowns are the danger for me and doesn't matter what group they are in. I know the TDOs have an almost impossible job but I'd like to see them toughen up on bad riding and start sending more people home for crap riding. Imagine if we were told to stick to 30mph on the road but there were no cameras or cops - do you think we would? The briefing is necessary but it needs to be backed up with more scrutiny of track behaviour by the instructors / race control. Maybe they need to look at the grouping system and the criteria for being in each group. A true novice group would be good but does it then mean the quicker boys lose track time or can't get on? Fit transponders and group by laptime? Ban anyone wearing Alpinestars? Have a special group for tossers?
