Choose a Sexy Classic
By James Whitham on 21/04/2010 16:13:04
Compulsive classic snaffler James Whitham talks you through buying a great big, candy-coloured slice of nostalgia
much everything I’ve bought over the last 10 years has at least doubled in value. But then, I am a canny Yorkshireman!Whitham’s top tips:If you’re going for a 1970s moped, buy an AP50 rather than a FS1E. They’re better to ride, with five gears instead

James Whitham Column - Feb 2008
By James Whitham on 15/02/2008 12:51:37
Another busy month in the Whitham mansions. He mourns the passing of his first jump-bike and the best jumper, and recounts an hilarious night in the company of the Fogartys
generation of kids to head for the local rec on their choppers and fashion ramps out of bricks and planks. At the time I had a Raleigh Whisp, a 50cc two-stroke ladies shopping bike that my dad had found in a skip outside his work and brought home in the boot

KTM 690 Duke R vs. Yorkshire Dales
By James Whitham on 04/11/2010 15:26:20
Highway to Heaven: Six bikes, six roads, six twats, six stories. Ben Bardon was forced to take photos of someone called James Whitham. Perhaps, more worryingly, he also had to listen to him for the best part of a Thursday afternoon
to be the most fun on the route you had in mind. One of my favourite stretches of road runs from the village of Barbon in the Yorkshire Dales, up over Calf Top and down into Dentdale, and I reckon it’s nothing like what you have in mind. Forget fast, sweeping

James Whitham Column - Sep 09
By James Whitham on 27/09/2009 14:44:26
I'm a naked bike fan, I like just about all of that genre of stuff
grooming meant you were a poof and facial hair and the slight waft of Brut was compulsory. I like the fact they don’t make you want to ride like a tit, get a stoppie wrong on an XJR1300 and the consequences aren’t worth thinking about. Go over the top

Things that go bump in the night
By James Whitham on 21/10/2010 14:26:42
In the deepest thickets of Derbyshire, a strange new breed of trail-rider is eschewing daytime riding in favour of heading out in the thick of night…
-time trail riding.I arrived at Glen’s place, a detached house in a nice suburban cul-de-sac at dusk. My main thought in the van on the way down was not to get drawn into doing anything too daft. The last thing I needed was to end up cuddling a tree at 50mph

James Whitham Column - Dec 09
By James Whitham on 27/12/2009 16:05:07
James gets a white-knuckle lap of the Nürburgring in a Skoda Flavia at the hands of Jack Burnicle, anorak flapping in the breeze and tyres squealing all the way...
.’During the seventies it became apparent the Ring was becoming too dangerous for top level international racing, on either two or four wheels, so work was begun on a new, shorter and safer circuit. This new track, the one used today, opened in 1984 and was built on most

First Ride: 2008 Yamaha YZF-R6
By James Whitham on 10/04/2008 23:14:59
James Whitham used to be a bit tasty on an R6 in World Supersport, so he’s uniquely placed to give the ‘08 bike a proper seeing-to...
of 130bhp on the in-house dyno was common, so Yamaha’s claims of 133bhp for this new ’08 bike should therefore put it on a par with my racer from back then. But d’ya know what? I’m convinced my old bike would still have the legs on it in terms of top

Living with a 2006 Triumph Scrambler
By James Whitham on 15/06/2006 16:49:10
James Whitham knows a thing or three about bikes. So how did he get on with the Triumph Scrambler?
I got used to the fact that the boat had a top speed of four knots (that's just less than 5mph to you land lubbers), I really enjoyed it.I know I'm gonna get slated for saying this - I can hear the 'tutting' noises already - but I'm gonna tell you

Splitting heirs: Yamaha YZF-R6 2005 vs. 2006
By James Whitham, Tim Dickson on 27/01/2011 10:26:19
I know the R6 well not only 'cos I raced one for three seasons in World Supersport but also because we used 'em as marshals' bikes on our track days.
sat on top of it, with the top of the seat and the back of the tank at what feels like the same level, and that pushes more weight forward. You get a lovely, lovely induction roar too, not loud, but a real deep, low sound feeding back through
