Stop Right Now: ABS vs. The Man
By Jon Urry on 29/11/2010 16:05:26
ABS: good for those that wants it. Or is it even better than that? Can you handle the truth? Be prepared, as Prof Jon Urry and his performing lab rats demonstrate to us all the startling reality
the total braking force much. And car systems have been in development for years. The first car with ABS was a Jensen FF Interceptor launched in the late 1960s. Mass-produced bikes didn't have ABS until the BMW K series in 1988.Crucially, bikes stop

Whitham's guide to better braking
By Jon Urry on 29/11/2010 15:36:51
Let Whit impart his fair share of knowledge to you, to help you get yer'sen stopped reet quick
1 START STOPPING"Most crashes on the brakes are down to the initial input. A panicked grab can result in a locked front wheel and a trip down the road. In the dry you can just slam it on, but not so in the wet. What you need do then is get some

Go drag racing ...on your stock road bike
By Jon Urry on 21/10/2010 17:02:24
It’s motorsport in its purest form. Take two vehicles, ¼ mile of straight tarmac, a set of traffic lights and two warring parties. The bullshit stops when the lights turn green…
The banter started the instant we booked our places on Santa Pod’s famous ¼ mile strip. Back and forth across the office psyching-out comments about botched clutch starts, acceleration, wind resistance and reflexes. Excuses were made, bike selection justified and the tension moun...

Bluffers Guide...Club Racing
By Jon Urry on 21/10/2010 16:52:36
Ever watched MotoGP and thought “I could do that if I had the breaks...”? Well stop dreaming and get racing. Here’s the inside line on the curious world of the British club racing scene...
HistoryLike most other bike sports, club racing was being organised almost a century ago. It was 1909 when the British Motorcycle Racing Club was first formed at Brooklands, legitimising amateur racing. In the late 1960s GPs were at a bit of a low ebb. Pure-racing bikes were gett...

Splitting Heirs: Ducati 998 v 1098
By Jon Urry on 19/01/2011 14:50:02
The Ducati 999 was just a stop-gap between the legendary 916 and the stunning new 1098. So for the first time ever, here are the two stablemates ridden head to head...
I have an ambition. I don't want to climb Everest, sleep with a supermodel or fly as a passenger in a Tornado. No, my ambition is fairly achievable. I just want to own a Ducati 916.For me the 916 is the defining bike of my adolescence. I was 17 when it was launched in 1994 and fr...

The Time Tunnel - Motorcycle Speed Record
By Jon Urry on 14/10/2010 14:57:49
The fastest bike in the world: 322.149mph, two Harley engines, 10,000 fans and one very brave man
wheel. In an earlier test the front tyre had blown. The only 15-inch tyres rated to 400mph were Firestones that stopped production in 1967, so we were forced to use 23-year-old tyres on our runs. After an earlier accident we swapped the tubed wheel for a

10 things bikers do that piss me off
By Jon Urry on 15/10/2010 11:46:57
Jon Urry often turns into a seething rage-filled monster when he's on his bike. And what's the cause? Other bikers, that's what...
. Sometimes they really piss me off! Here's why... " says special correspondent Ron Jury1. Bikers who stop just in front of me at a set of traffic lights when I've already overtaken themI've stopped at a set of lights, so why does this idiot feel the need

Zero to 100mph to Zero
By Jon Urry on 26/05/2010 09:05:14
So what if your motorbike is over 10 years old, it will still demolish a £150,000 supercar away from a set of traffic lights
't just dump it, slip the clutch for the first few metres, just enough to get the bike moving fast before fully disengaging it and opening the throttle to the stop. Forget what's ahead, the runway is clear of traffic, instead concentrate on the engine

Ducati 1098R - First ride impressions
By Jon Urry on 28/01/2008 11:07:47
Jon Urry checks in straight after his first session on the 1098R
to the stop exiting the corners and I’ve yet to actually get the bike spinning. The combination of race compound tyre and a hot Spanish track seem to be providing enough grip to drive the bike forward rather than spin it. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing

Devon Help Us - 2003 Tourer Test
By Jon Urry on 05/11/2003 13:43:43
The sorry tale of taking three express tourers to the land of eternal rain and mist in an attempt to find a ray of sunshine
was beautiful. Mum told me dad was wandering around the garden without a shirt on in his shorts and sandals (maybe Scotland wasn't such a bad idea after all!). What could go wrong?Stopping at the first service station just before Bristol things seemed
