Lazy or manic, it's up to you. I sometimes forget how good it is, until I leave the missus at home!

Engine, shaft drive, quality, looks, (compared to Pan/RT/Trophy which are it's real rivals.)
my first 2003 model used to cook me,the heat from between your legs really spoiled the bike, I would still have it today otherwise. My 2007 is more or less completely cured of this, but is unfortunately quite a bit heavier.
About time for me to change again, but there is nothing I prefer on the market with shaft drive and a proper pillion seat. Fuel consumption varies between 45mpg and 60mpg keeping between 70-80ish on mixed roads. Just leave it in top and it will still stomp away from 30 limits with pillion and luggage leaving other traffic behind. I love it!

I have a Gen 1, (non-ABS) I bought new ten years ago (Aug 2003)and only now starting to give me problems

Fast, comfortable & superb acceleration; I just love riding it and can ride all day only stopping for fuel.
Awful build quality; engine is good but the fixtures & fittings are cheap quality (internal water pipes are just mild steel). Can be lumpy at low speeds in traffic & a bit of a handful (but that may be better on the later models, I don't know) but that goes on the open road. The exhaust downpipes & collector box are stainless steel, but it is very poor quality; which is what lets it down
I changed the screen (I'm 6'1)the day I bought it. Fitted fender extender & radiator protector; a Corbin seat and changed the stock pipes for Biowulf one's. This model didn't come with paniers as standard so runs with a full set of Givi including top-box; and fully loaded handles just the same: which says a lot.I've heard much comment about the suspension but never noticed much of a problem with stock item. I'm at the replacement stage & 2nd FJR is certainly in the frame as I know what I'm getting. A superb engine on a well balanced bike but with cheap shoddy electrics, piping and fixtures

I find the FJR good at what is was designed for and with a bit of effort they can get a wriggle on even 2up.

Thw motor is very flexable and frugal,a very neutral bike to ride long distances.
I find the Suspension is too soft as standard but many owners like it as is.
I have an orginal model and is so good at what it does I cant see a reason to sell and upgrade. That says it all realy.

BAD DESIGN FLAWS THAT CAN CAUSE DEATH OR SERIOUS INJURY...

Great ride when working right..
Loom and electronics not up to the job, Rear shock not able for more than 25k miles, ECU melted at 30k miles
Am now trying to convert the bike to a manual shift system, should be fun as Yamaha won't stand by their workmanship etc.
Stay away from it if you can't afford to waste money on a toy that's not upto the job of reliable touring, try the Honda Pan or the beemer GT also watch the GTR as it also has electrical issues.
