Honda VFR800 VTEC (2005 - present)

Our Review

Reviewed: by Visordown
IT’S TAKEN A while to get round to it but Honda has finally come up with a solution to the issues affecting the VFR800’s variable valve VTEC. The problem was a momentary ‘hiccup’ at the point of transition from two- to four-valve operation. Often not an issue, the hiccup was nevertheless ...  Continue reading

I bought a 2004 800 V-tec a few months ago and now I am finding that the ride is good but the ride is spoilt because a problem exists. On an even throttle the power seems to die and with a very fraction of adjustment to the throttle the power can kick back in quite sharply. It seems (to a non tech) that its fuel starvation? I have just had the valves all reset and the plugs cleaned and checked and at first the problem had gone but then within about 100 miles the problem returned. Could it be somthing to do with the mapping system ... whatever that is? Any other ideas?

I just about a month ago baught a 03 VTEC done about a thousand miles and had two or three instances of what you describe one was lent over a fair bit about 80 on a dual carriage way bend, shook me up a little but after a few days i put it down to the vtech coming on and off but i definatly remeber seeing the rev counter needle jump down and up, keep us posted mate if you find anything out.

Mibe a power commander would be an idea?
Could just be the fi is a bit keen to shut the fuel off
On a closed throttle?
Although it sounds a bit too serious for that.
Try the vfr forums ,a mine of info.
Someone else is bound to have had, and
Solved the problem

hi,

i have exactly the same issue, have you had any resolution? I am a month into my new bike and am getting worried. had it checked and starter valves re set but still the same. i have been told the powercommander may not fix it ...whats next?? it is nothing to do with the 7000 line vtec but happens lower down 2500-5500 rpm. if this is a serious unfixable issue what can i do . it is under warrenty still

please help if any one has any advice

Pacemaker

I got mine new in June (2011), this bike had big shoes to fill in replacing my CBR600 F3 (that i owned from new). I've had a few minor issues with it. Will cut out sometimes pulling the clutch in & coming to stop. Guys on some VFR forums said I should up the idle, still does it from time to time though.

Its a very techno bike compared to the F3, but all fuel injected bikes are it seems. In addressing some of the comments by other owners with regard to the VFR's quirks, there is a lot of info out there & most of the problems can be aimed at the PAIR valve (open when you use contant throttle) & the O2 sensors (makes it run to lean). So In the New Year I'm getting a Power Commander & doing the PAIR block, I would be doing this anyway for when I get my Staintunes, but sooner than later I think. Next service will also include a starter valve balance.

I've owned bikes with quirks before & most, if not all of them can be fixed.

Apart from that, It's a good thing, took me a while to get used to the extra weight, but fine now Since my 1st service (Note: non dealership, but mechanic I trust) It goes very well & runs much cooler & is less jerky in traffic. Mechanic said he took up heaps of slack adjusting the throttle, which wasn't noticable to me. Oh & his quote for the 1st Vtec valve adjustment is a 3rd of what the dealers qouted.

Handles pretty well & I do like the Vtec urge, but the F3 did that well before the 6700 RPM. Summing up, I like it, want to love it, but I just can't seem to bond with it. Well see what happens this summer.
