So, you think the ZZR-1400 is ugly?

A short article defending the ZZR-1400 and all it stands for

In my NEC Preview article, I may have given the impression that I was a fan of Kawasaki's ZZR-1400. And that's because I am - I love it. I had literally no replies from anyone agreeing with me, and 3 replies from people who completely disagreed. One comment suggested I'd been given one by Kawasaki, hence why I am so positive about the ZZR (Kawasaki, if you're reading this, I have cleared a large ZZR-1400 shaped space in my back yard).

I understand that it may not be the prettiest thing out there, but don't stare at it and look for sportsbike like qualities, like a tiny front end, pert little seat, or manageable size. Compare it to a sportsbike and it doesn't fair well aesthetically, I'll admit it.

It's the concept that I love, because in 2000 all manufacturers signed an agreement limiting bikes to a 'not exactly slow' 186mph. This came about after the launch of Suzuki's 1298cc Hayabusa, which - it was claimed - could do 200mph. It never quite managed it but at the time, the Hayabusa was the fastest of them all.

Until this gentlemen's agreement, the scope for larger capacity, machines seemed endless but then it all ground to a halt. Kawasaki launched their - still not slow - ZX-12R but the promise of larger and larger capacity machines faded.

The latest GSX-R1000, is quicker through the 1/4 mile than the 'Busa, faster off the line and will pull to the limiter in top, leaving the 'Busa behind. For me, that marks the end of the mighty Hayabusa's significance. It can no longer claim to be the fastest production bike, or king of the traffic light GP. And with it, the point of these hypersports tourers faded.

Until now that is, and that's why the ZZR-1400 brings a smile to my face. Rumours of 200bhp at the rear wheel from its brutal 1352cc engine make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. It's totally pointless but in a way that's the point. No-one needs a 'tourer' that shreds rear tyres in 2000 miles. No-one needs anymore than 186mph, or anything close to that but just to know that Kawasaki are prepared to produce the ZZR-1400 marks them up a notch in my book.

While our country is obsessed with being a few mph over the speed limit and more and more bikes feature 'safety' in their sales pitch (ABS on sportsbikes anyone?) Kawasaki has - in my opinion - said in a big, bold Pearl Meteor Grey or Candy Thunder Blue statement "Have some of that!"Onto the bike itself:

It's interesting to note the ZZR-1200 has been discontinued. Perhaps we should have guessed that something bigger and better was in the pipeline. I've put the ZZR-1200 up against the ZZR-1400. That 14 front end is beautiful. To me, it looks like a basking shark; it's aggressive yet it looks lazy with it. The ZZR-1200 didn't know what it wanted to be, the 14 looks like it's on a mission.

When you look at it side on, the old 1200 looks fickle, disjointed and bulky. The ZZR-1400 doesn't look svelte, I know, but it looks more compact and complete. It doesn't look like the square-looking ZX-12R - which is a good thing - and it shares some family characteristics with the current ZX-10R and 6R.

From the rear, the ZZR-1400 beats the ZZR-1200 hands down too. It's just not ugly; it shares a similarity with the 6R, 10R and Z750. It's not as slim as a modern Blade for instance, but the ZZR-1200 looks bug-eyed from the front and behind and the ZZR-1400 is a drastic improvement on the ZZR series to date.

I can only hope the ZZR sells well for Kawasaki and this encourages more manufacturers to get back to the CAD software and work out other ingenious ways to house stupidly large, pointlessly powerful engines in-between two wheels.

I think it looks gorgeous, I really want one...and may even my abandon my 'never buy a new bike' policy when it comes out next year.

Saw it at the NEC and the bike looks awesome from the side, but the front is bug ugly-it is too rounded and the lights reminded me of spiders eyes. Wouldn't say no if someone gave me one thought.

To be fair, the photos of it do not do it any justice, the back of the bike looks excellent, but the front of the bike is waaaaaayyyyyy uglier in the flesh.

Fully agree with your sentiments ...............

But it's still baboons butt ugly........

Posted: 15/11/2005 at 11:54

I happen to like it, its different which is what its all about really!

Posted: 15/11/2005 at 13:07

It makes me laugh to read all the comments on it's appearance. BMWs aren't exactly beautifull looking but they sell boat loads cos they work well. Perhaps consensus on the 14 should be curtailed until you ride the beast.

It could be a great sport tourer if you can do a trip without going through rear tires.

when I saw it at the NEC my jaw dropped at it's horribleness, and almost everyone around said how hideous it was. It's great that this bike exists, and there's plenty of pretty bikes that stink, but I guess we all want to have something that we fall in love with, and this just yells "slap me".

Posted: 15/11/2005 at 22:41

Good article, I thought. Found myself nodding in agreement to just about everything.

Great looking bike, for its class, from all angles bar the front. It's got too many eyes - looks odd in a way that reminds me of those little green "the claw, the claw" aliens in Toy Story. Not the right image at all. Should light up the road pretty well tho.

As long as it's kept parked facing a wall it'll look fine - and when it's on the move nobody's going to see the front for very long anyway!

PS. I wasn't at the NEC so I'm only going on the pics in this article.

Posted: 15/11/2005 at 22:45

i agree it looks odd but then when Audi went to the huge grille i thought it was horrid, now it just looks right

Posted: 15/11/2005 at 23:28

Seen ZZR1200s before and thought they looked fine, but now looking at it compared alongside the new ZZR1400 it looks shit.

For some reason the profile (side on angle) shape of the headlight fairing reminds me of the Thunderace...

They had the zzr1400 on fith gear, its lovely in flesh

Posted: 16/11/2005 at 12:08

Yuck. The styling looks 20 years old already

Posted: 01/12/2005 at 19:02

Screw you guys, it's gorgeous. Pointless, impractical, expensive to run, and an absolute stunner.

Posted: 02/12/2005 at 04:08

Oh yes, that's the way to do it! Stir it up! Good article & loved the side by side comparison. Would have been interesting to have had a sound bite from the designers in there. Like that, very polished indeed.

On what planet?

Nice read. That 'gentleman's agreement' wasn't much of an agreement anyway. I recon the styling will change for the B model, judging from others' reactions to it. While I'd agree the rear is tidy I feel the front is grosse, and I'm not keen on the 'testerossa' grill on the side. Gonna have to wait for later models before I start preparing a space for one but I'm glad Kawasaki have made one and they get to retain their crown. PS: I think you under estimate the zx12r.

As they say Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Following the bike show i Visited my dealer and put a deposit on one, thats how confident i am Kwack will come up with a Stonking bike.

When they brought out the ZZR12 it was a joke just an uprated overbored ZZR11.

I shall keep my old ZZR11 cos its a lovely bike to ride.

Kawasaki had to bring something out so they were top of the power tree again, (thank goodness its good looking unlike the Bussa).

So hurry up April and in the words of Mr Kawasaki ----Let the Good Times Roll :burnout:

I've always loved big Kawasakis. I've owned them from the Z1 to the ZZR11.
Only thing is,as I get older I find the lightness of the sportsbikes more appealing.
A mate has his name down for the 14...so I'm looking forward to a go!

Posted: 31/01/2006 at 13:40

I love big Kawasakis, and the ZZR 1400 is just so awesome. It's just so totally cool. I'd buy one and then strap on a turbo and some Nitrous. FTP, 400kph is what I want. Kawasaki rules!

Fu**ing Awsome

I't about time Kawasaki was back again kicking ass.

Posted: 31/03/2006 at 21:39

I have to agree hold heartedly with this article the new ZZR1400 is fantastic and from the brief
and most pleasurable sit that I had on it, it did feel most comfortable, alas I shall have to wait for a second
hand one to come may way, but will drool over everyone that I see

Posted: 16/04/2006 at 17:00

I have 2004 Hayabusa with a smart tre as the only modification and I can tell you from several foolish attemps by new Gixxer 1000s that the Busa will crush them on top speed.

Posted: 21/05/2006 at 17:42

Before I even read the thread I was saying to myself...honestly: That's gotta be one of the most beautiful bikes I've ever seen. Diablo black of course. Just something about those contours. Beauty uncompromised by unnecessary crap. It retains its sleekness with still eye-catching simplicity in style. Yes its simple, smaller, compact looking and even coming off subtle. But its definitely a good thing. Something that'll obviously stand out in the crowd while everything else is screaming. So low profile in the literal sense that it takes the opposite role, getting noticed like an exotic auto. Nothing new for a sales tactic, but Kawasaki's far from stupid with a move like that. It makes an even bolder statement coupled with the power it delivers for a crotch rocket...not unlike that of the testarossa in its heyday among the supercar world. When a monster of power is housed in simplicity, it simply kicks ass. What's funny shit here is how most who dislike it seem to point out style remnants of early exotic autos. IE testarossa grill, lookin like its 20 yrs old, an almost sci-fi front appearance etc. With all this, its obvious the crowds gonna go 50/50 when it all comes down to it. Most of the new shit out there looks like crap. Too bulky, making poor attempts to be "loud" while sacrificing the sleekness and beauty the exotic style was originally meant for. This undoubtedly is one of the few that isn't.
