Review: Weise Bergen winter gloves

Five minute sink-dip tested

THERE are only two things a product needs to be to deserve the highest recommendation: effective and cheap.

These gloves seem to do quite a good job on those counts.

You can spend £200 on waterproof gloves if you go for a Gore-Tex lining. The lining in these Weise gloves is called McTex.

At £63, it was with healthy scepticism that I dipped my gloved hands into a sink up to the wrist, expecting to quickly expose McTex as the meal-deal option its name suggests.

Five minutes later, I removed my hands, completely dry.

The gloves don't exactly suggest ultimate crash protection. There's leather on the palm and fabric on the back, hard armour at the knuckle and finger joints, and an elasticated wrist.

But they are easy to put on and a welcoming place for your hands. With 150g lining on the back and 60g on the palm, they should offer some decent insulation, and they're soft and flexible enough to allow easy movement when riding.

I don't know if they'd be warm enough for long rides in deepest winter but the simple fact they're waterproof, at this price, is impressive.
