STERILGARDA YAMAHA rider Cal Crutchlow crashed out of Race Two at Monza World Superbikes at the weekend due to a stone piercing the rider's oil cooler, the team has announced.
The damage to Crutchlow's YZF-R1 was caused by a stone thrown up from Max Biaggi's RSV4's rear tyre, as Crutchlow followed the Italian along Monza's 190mph+ start/finish straight. This incident can be seen in the attached clip.
“I started really well and didn’t take long to get tucked in behind Max, I knew exactly what I was doing and had my strategy sorted to pass him on the last lap," said Crutchlow, who bagged a third in Race One.
"Incredibly, some stones flew up off his back wheel, I was so close behind I felt some hit my helmet and unfortunately a big one made a hole in my oil cooler. I made it through another lap, but coming into the first chicane it must have reached my back tyre and I went straight down.”
