Video: Pikes Peak International Hill Climb to get designated spectator zones

Fans will be able to view from one of six spectator zones

The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (PPIHC) is to get designated spectator zones from 2014.

A general admission ticket will allow spectators to view 'The Race to the Clouds' from one of six designated zones, which account for roughly 1.5 miles of the course’s length.

The new restrictions are being put in place to improve the safety of not only the spectactors, but also the racers. For the last 98 years, fans have been free to roam the 12.42 mile course in Colorado, and are are often found positioned in high-risk areas, regularly seen running across a ‘hot’ track at inopportune moments.

For 2014, entrants will get access to the starting line, Halfway Picnic Grounds, Ski Area, Glen Cove, Cove Creek, and the Devil’s Playground.

Once the race begins, fans will have to remain in their chosen viewing location as police will be present to issue trespassing tickets for those found trying to move between zones.
