DUCATI are desperate to achieve success with Valentino Rossi and Nicky Hayden and at Laguna Seca each rider will have four bikes at their disposal, with two of the GP11 and the GP11.1 each.
The results at last Sunday's German GP gave Ducati a difficult decision over which of the 800s is best for the riders at the moment, therefore they will send both versions to California - Rossi and Hayden will decide which works best at Laguna Seca in the first session on Friday.
“I think that we’ll try to use both versions of the Desmosedici on Friday," explained Valentino, "So that we can compare them and do some work for both the near term and the future, because we want to learn as much as possible. We’re aware that it could be difficult because we’ll also have to be preparing for the race, but we think that in order to improve our bike, it’s important to try everything possible."
For Hayden, the importance of feeling confident and able to ride a bike aggressively is vital for a good race at Laguna. The American will make his final decision on which bike to ride on Thursday, but he added that his side of the garage will probably try the GP11.1 at some stage
Describing his attraction to Laguna Seca, Rossi said: "For me, Laguna represents a great corner, the Corkscrew, and many nice memories, including one of the best races of my career, in 2008. In any case, it’s always a pleasure to race in the United States because the motorcycle world here is really nice. Of course I’m even happier that Jerry has returned and I look forward to seeing him in the garage again with all the guys.”
Nicky added to the Italian's description of the American circuit: "Turn 1 and the Corkscrew are very technical, and pretty much the whole track links together. On a MotoGP bike, there really aren’t any straightaways, because you’re always shifting, turning or braking."
A word of encouragement from the boss of Ferrari, as quoted on Gazzetta dello Sport, Luca di Montezemelo said of Rossi's troubles: "Valentino is a world-beater, who has always given all he's got. But a world-beater is not an engineer. What was true for Alonso with the car is also true for Rossi, and I hope he can find a bike that is more competitive.
"With an average bike, he can win. I'm sorry that he's going through such a bad time at the moment, but great champions always know how to bounce back." commented di Montezemolo on the problems Valentino is having with the Desmosedici.
