YAMAHA has been having a tough time recently and much of its development work has been going into making new products for the developing world rather than the established motorcycle markets. That makes sense in business terms, and appears to be paying off with improvements in the firm's financial figures, but it means there still aren't many rumours of new bikes for the mature markets of the western world.
One bike that, by rights, should be replaced in 2012 is the R6. It's been said the firm already has a new model developed, but it's withheld it – delaying its launch in the hope that the 600cc super sports market picks up. At the moment there isn't much sign of that, but there's a good chance Yamaha will launch a new R6 at some stage in the next year or so, either as a 2012 or 2013 model.
The R1 is unlikely to get big changes before the 600 has been launched, but could get minor styling or technical updates just to keep it fresh, particularly if Suzuki and Honda both offer new models in the class.
Perhaps more interesting are the patents filed by the firm that seem to show a sports tourer style road bike based around the parallel twin engine and shaft drive transmission of the Super Ténéré.
