SOUTH Devon County Council have claimed that road accidents involving motorcyclists have been reduced on four major routes in Devon thanks to targeted road safety signs.

The signs, which read 'THINK BIKE' and 'BIKER IN YOUR BLINDSPOT?' have been placed on roads that have seen a number of serious accidents involving motorcyclists: the A379, A380, A381 and A382. The council state that slight, serious and fatal accident have fallen from 14 to just one from 2010 to 2011.

Councillor Stuart Hughes, Devon County Council Cabinet Member for Highways and Transportation, said: “These signs have raised awareness of motorcyclists among all road users and we are seeing positive results stem from that.

"The County Council is committed to reducing the number of collisions on our roads and making Devon's roads safer. The warmer summer weather always brings more caravans, horse riders, cyclists and motorcyclists onto the county’s roads for journeys often just for the pleasure of driving and riding, so I would urge all road users to travel safely.”

Research has shown that the majority of accidents in Devon involving motorcycles occur at road junctions and at commuter speeds.
