M4 bus lane to be axed

Labour-induced bus lane gets chop in new Tory initiative

THE GOVERNMENT is to announce the M4 bus lane will be scrapped at the end of the year when the party holds its annual conference later this year.

From 2011, all road users will be able to enter the 3.5 mile (5.6km) lane, which until now was reserved exclusively for buses, black taxi cabs and motorcycles.

The lane, which will be suspended from 24 December for 18 months when it will be brought back into use for the Olympics, is situated on the London-bound carriageway from near Heathrow.

The bus lane was introduced by former Transport Secretary John 'Two Jags' Prescott in 1999.
