BMW tells R1200RT owners not to ride bikes

No guarantee suspension won’t fail

BMW HAS instructed owners of R1200RTs to stop riding their bikes, saying there is no guarantee a component in the rear suspension will not fail.

The instruction affects 2014-model-year R1200RTs with the latest liquid-cooled boxer engine and semi-active ‘Dynamic ESA’ suspension.

Around 500 of the bikes have been sold in the UK.

A BMW statement says: ‘We regret to inform you that with immediate effect all 2014 R1200RTs with Dynamic ESA must not be ridden. At this moment, we cannot guarantee that the plunger rod assembly for the rear suspension unit will not fail.

‘Customers of affected machines will be contacted by their dealer immediately and asked not to ride their motorcycle. Whilst this is extremely disappointing for our customers, their safety is BMW Motorrad's priority.’
