BMW recalls 4,453 bikes and scooters in the US

Faulty side-stand switch on R1200GS, R1200R, F800GS, F700GS, C650GT and C600 Sport

BMW HAS launched a US recall of 4,453 bikes spanning three model ranges over a potential side-stand switch problem which could make the engine cut out.

Models subject to the recall include the C600 Sport and C650 GT maxi scooters, the F700GS and F800GS parallel twins and the R1200R and R1200GS from the boxer range.

All affected bikes were manufactured in 2013.

Water can enter the side-stand switch, causing the engine to cut out as though the stand were down.

According to a recall notice on the website of the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, ‘An unexpected shutdown increases the risk of a crash.’

The notice says: ‘BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain model year 2013 C 600 Sport, C 650 GT, F 700 GS, F 800 GS, F 800 GS Adventure, F 800 GT, R 1200 R and R1200 GS motorcycles. Water may enter the side-stand switch preventing the motorcycle from starting or potentially shutting off the motorcycle while it is being ridden.’
