A 75-year-old woman car driver whose cataracts in both eyes reduced her visibility so much her optician “read her the riot act” about driving was sentenced to a £500 and three year ban for killing a biker.
Eileen Baker, 75, got the penalty for causing the death of 22-year old Paul MacKintosh. Judge Paul Glenn told Baker: "No words at my disposal will even begin to convey the deep sense of loss felt by his family. You are a stubborn lady and you still do not think you have done anything wrong."
Stafford Crown Court heard Paul died instantly in the crash near Cannock last February. Baker pulled out of a side road and collided with Paul's motorbike.
Evidence given said that Baker drove without her glasses despite having been "read the riot act" by her optician for doing so. Baker had cataracts in both eyes which: “Was like looking through a dirty windscreen".
Paul's mum Elaine, of Daviot, Aberdeenshire, said that Baker was: "Very cold, callous and unsympathetic. I don't think justice was done and she showed no remorse. I feel gutted at the verdict."
So, when she gets her licence back in three years time she'll be 78 with even less vision. Er, lifetime ban, anyone?
