Buell 1125R shows impressive racing potential

After a disappointing press launch, Buell's oddball superbike shows great promise at early race events

Buell 1125R - Visordown Motorcycle News Buell's 1125R in action at Daytona
BUELL's 1125R might have not enjoyed a friendly reception on the press launch - the reports were less than flattering for the all-new Superbike, with the suspension taking most of the flack - however, it hasn't taken the 1125R long to make an impact in racing circles.

In a 300 mile endurance race in the US, an 1125R was in contention for the win, when a rubber build-up on the 'lifetime' drive belt caused the belt to fray, forcing the team to pit. They eventually finished 25th.

Then in Germany, an 1125R, entered by a German Buell dealer, Team Buell Hannover, finished an impressive 2nd in a 1000km endurance race at the Hockenheim circuit. They were beaten only by the factory BMW team. What makes this 2nd place even more impressive is the fact that Team Buell Hannover only had three days to strip and prepare their 1125R before raceday.

“I am absolutely ecstatic. The 1125R is a quantum leap in output and performance. The 146hp twin-cylinder engine, developed by Rotax to Buell specifications, is a perfect match for the best chassis that Erik Buell has ever designed.” says Volker Schirmer, manager of Buell Hannover.

Its a TZ750--well sort of. If you never rode one in competition, and most are too young to have, you miss what Erik was doing. The race results are just a point of what the 1125R is. Its not the FBolt anymore, its not insane number crazy, and it is, but isnt, a race ride. Its not Euro or Metric. Its the same feeling, and Erik and I rode those TZs back then, that I felt, but with everthing you liked and all the badness gone. Its not safe, either in styling or attitude, and its definitely not a Harley Davidson. It is, however, an American masterpiece of engineering, styling, and pure determined will and effort. If you dont want one, there are softer rides out there, but none will reward you with just as much as you give and never fail to ...
