BEN SPIES is going into the Brno round of the World Superbikes in a self-proclaimed confident mood – despite never having ridden at the Czech track before.

The Yamaha factory man is now just 14 points behind long-time overall leader Noriyuki Haga in the overall standings. Over the past few rounds of the series Spies has managed to peg back his Japanese rival from what was a 72 point advantage.

There are now five rounds of the championship left, giving Spies ten races left to win the title in his first year in WSB.

Added to which, Haga is still recovering from his string of injuries suffered in an horrific 130mph crash at Donington a month ago.

Spies said: "Brno is yet again another new track for us so I'm really looking forward to running around the circuit this week and then getting out on the bike on Friday to get a feel for it. We only have ten races left now to the end of the championship so we need to make every one count.

"Everybody is going to be working hard to be up front this weekend so it's going to be a tough race but I'm excited about it."
