JONATHAN Rea was the only man to lap Phillip Island in under 1m32s in the opening qualifying session, closely followed by three Ducatis.

Rea's time of 1'31.959 put him in front of Jakub Smrz, followed by Althea Racing's Superstock 1000 winner Davide Giugliano in third and Carlos Checa in fourth.

However, Irishman Eugene Laverty suffered another setback, crashing his RSV4 in the opening laps of the session. Laverty was taken to the medical centre, having taken a bang to the head but was declared fit and discharged.

Glad I picked Rea for my fantasy WSB team :)

Less impressed I picked Aoyama as well....

Bloody hell, give him a chance!! He's been riding a superbike for all of 10 minutes!!!

Epic by Jonathan though. Gutted about Norge..he's my pick for the title this year.

Was just hoping that with his pedigree he would be fast out of the box. Remember Simoncelli on a Superbike?

As for Laverty, it is a harsh bit of luck. Although not as bad as Hopper.

Good point, but, given that Marco's ride was a one off, and he was on home turf, it was always gonna be a win it or bin it type of effort.

Aoyama will come good. I have faith, yeah, gutted for Hopper, properly gutted.
