Yamaha boss: 'Lorenzo and Spies ideal'

Priorities for second Yamaha seat are Spies, Crutchlow and Dovizioso, but Lin Jarvis not ruling out Rossi

YAMAHA boss Lin Jarvis has said that despite his troubles and the interest from Cal Crutchlow and Andrea Dovizioso, Ben Spies is still favourite for staying in the factory line-up.

Signing Jorge Lorenzo was the first priority for Yamaha, but now the focus for the factory team is on filling the in demand seat on the second YZR-M1.

“Our official position is that the ideal scenario for us would be Ben Spies and Lorenzo, but obviously we need better results from Ben Spies,” Jarvis told Sportrider.com. “He has the ability potentially, but we need riders on the podium or fighting for the podium regularly. His results have not unfortunately been good enough. So we are hoping he can fulfill his potential and therefore be the automatic candidate.”

The Tech 3 pair of Crutchlow and Dovizioso have both set the ambitions on stepping up to a factory-spec M1 next and Jarvis admitted that he is still looking at them.

One looming name is that of Valentino Rossi. The Italian is supposedly lining up a competitive ride in 2013, according to Dorna boss Carmelo Ezpeleta, but has continued to counter rumours that he wants to stay at Ducati.

Jarvis added his thoughts: “If he doesn’t stay at Ducati, perhaps at the moment now we have Lorenzo, maybe Honda is the more logical place, because I think they have a need to compete against us next year, and compete with Lorenzo.

“So I want to see first what HRC will do...whether they will fill the spot as we think they will probably with Dani and Marquez, now that the rookie rule is cancelled."

But he closed saying, “You can’t rule Rossi out of being on a Yamaha in one of the teams. But our priorities are as I say looking at Ben, Andrea and Crutchlow, but anything could finally happen. Until each three spots are filled, anything could happen.”

Spies needs to do better, Crutchlow and Dovi want a factory ride, Rossi might move from Ducati, and finally, anything could happen.

Thanks Lin for telling us nothing that we didn't already know.

What he is really saying is that Yamaha want Spies to stay on their bike to keep US sales bouyant.

I cannot see at the moment how Ben's the main choice behind Lorenzo???

This season:

6th, 4th, 5th, 6th, 3rd, 4th, 2nd.

Simply not good enough for a factory rider (whose not riding a pig of a Ducati)...

So where does that leave Bradley Smith next year??

I think fluke has hit the nail on the head, Yamaha want Spies for his huge fanbase from his AMA days to go out and buy R1s.

He has had a terrible season so far, but a lot of that can be explained by bad luck and tyre problems that Rossi has also been hit by. I'm wondering if he is being hit by the tyre problems more than others due to his size, simular to Redding in Moto2. Just a thought

"So where does that leave Bradley Smith next year??"

On a Tech3 CRT, AT BEST, as it is all he deserves. So many riders more deserving of the Tech3 M1 than him, including Redding.

Smith is an OK rider, but will never be anything special. Redding is by far the superior rider of the pair and I think the step up to MotoGP will suit his style much, much better too.

I don't know the details of Smith's 2013 MotoGP contract, but I'd bet Herve is going over it!

Yeah, signing Brad so early was a tad premature. It will be interesting to see what happens.

Before people start slagging Bradley off too much, please remind yourselves that the Mistral 610 has had NO development to speak of since 2010.

And Brad's still doing a sterling job on it.
