Rossi backs 1000cc return

NINE-TIME World Champion Valentino Rossi has backed an initiative to bring 1000cc engines back into MotoGP.

In 2007, the sport introduced a new rule reducing engine capacity from 990cc to 800cc in a bid to increase safety. The move has been described by Rossi as 'the biggest mistake in the last 15 years'. The Italian is concerned some riders have become too dependent on electronic rider aids, and believes a return to the 990 era would boost competition and increase spectator enjoyment.

"I would return MotoGP to 1,000cc and I would remove 70 per cent of the electronics," Rossi told Rai Sport. "That's a fair reduction, I'd say.

"Unfortunately, for motorised sports it's difficult: until recently there weren't many rules and everyone pushed to the maximum. We need to impose limits, but in an intelligent fashion."

Sounds as though Mr Rossi's not planning to retire just yet, does it?
