VALENTINO ROSSI set the fastest lap time at the second day of testing at Jerez, putting 1m 39.525s on the board.
Track conditions were wet as the riders took to the track in the morning, but improved drastically as the test went on, drying out by the end of the day.
It is the first time The Doctor has outpaced his team mate (and reigning champion) Jorge Lorenzo since he returned to Yamaha.
Lorenzo achieved the second fastest time, just fractions of a second behind Rossi.
Repsol Honda slipped down the leaderboard over the course of the day, with Dani Pedrosa running fourth fastest, while rookie Marc Marquez came seventh.
Particularly pleased by the day's testing will be Cal Crutchlow on the Yamaha Tech 3 (who ran third overall) and Andrea Dovizioso who achieved a strong fifth fastest time on the notoriously tricky Ducati.
Gresini Honda rider Alvaro Bautista fractured two fingers and suffered a sprained knee after losing control at turn five, despite a promising start which placed him sixth at the end of the day.
