INDIANAPOLIS MOTOGP weekend was tragically marred by the death of a 13-year-old competitor Peter Lenz, after the youngster fell on the warm-up lap, and was struck by another rider as he tried to escape the track.

Peter - tipped to be a future star - was taken by ambulance to hospital but doctors were unable to save him and he was pronounced dead several hours later.

Peter's death made him the youngest person to die at the 101-year-old venue.

It was the first death at the track since IndyCar driver Tony Renna was killed in testing in October 2003.

Peter was part of the USGPRU ( US Gran Prix Racers Union) 250 Moriwaki series...

This is a series for 12 to 18 year old up and coming racers...

I should have included that this race/class was added to the program as a preview of the proposed/coming (?) Moto3 class...

We, at the race, heard nothing of the accident... It apparently happened at the other end of the track from where we were sitting... We saw none of the emergency response or anything...

We didn't even know there was a problem/tragedy until after we left and were on our way home, listening to the radio.

I understand that Peter and his family were good friends with Collin Edwards and that the news of the young mans passing made its way around the paddock about 90 minutes prior to the start of the GP race.

I know it took a HUGE edge off the good feelings I had after a great weekend of racing and other "events"...

I'm still really bummed about it... and I really feel bad for his family...

Peter's family gave their all to support his career.  They are probably in a very tough place both emotionally and financially.  Current AMA DSB points leader Josh Herrin started a memorial fund to support Peter's family, you can find it here:

I dunno what to make of all this. If IF Suzuki do go the CRT route, I reckon it would be a bit of a shame. But I can understand the reasons,...
