Hopkins: 'I want to get back into MotoGP'

BSB runner-up puts himself in the shop window

JOHN Hopkins has said he wants to be back in MotoGP 'full-time'.

Hopkins, runner-up to Tommy Hill in this year's British Superbike championship, will be racing on a second Suzuki alongside Alvaro Bautista at this weekend's Malaysian MotoGP at Sepang.

Hopkins said: "I’m heading to Sepang with only MotoGP on my mind! When I went to Brno I was still in the middle of the BSB season and that was my main priority, but now I am totally focused on doing the best I can for Rizla Suzuki, the team and myself. I want to get back into MotoGP full-time and I cannot wait to get on the bike and show what I can do. I’ve seen Álvaro’s performances in recent races and the GSV-R looks like a great piece of kit now, it seems like the factory and the crew have done a good job and I just can’t wait to get on it. My finger is still sore, but that won’t hold me back, I’m so happy to be back here and it’s where I want to stay!”

With more bums than seats for factory rides and with Suzuki still yet to commit to next year's MotoGP championship, Hopkins is fast running out of options. Perhaps the rumoured Paul Bird CRT team will be an option for Hopkins.

There is no doubt it would be brilliant to have Hopper back in Moto GP. But, as you say, where's he gonna go?

It's gonna have to be CRT if anywhere, the fact that Suzuki haven't even said there gonna be in the paddock next year yet!! Reading a few other pieces I have seen there might be some other rides. I am not entirely sure the Paul Bird thing is gonna happen is it?

If Suzuki do stay, they have to (imo) give the ride to Alvaro for the year, after all the hard work and bad luck he's had, it's finally starting to turn the corner for the GSV-R. I hopr they stay, would be even better to have 2 Suzukis there, but I can't see it happening.

Shame.

If he can only make runner up in BSB then he's not going to be a success in Moto GP, there are plenty more talented individuals in the queue ahead of him.

Oh dear. Not aware of the fact he was 4th overall in the 2007 season. And is regarded by many as someone with a great deal of talent still. And if Paul Denning is using him as a backup rider, he's got to be rather useful. Do you not think?

Who out of interest is a "more talented individual"?

Only just second. and thats with missing the cadwell round due to his knackered finger. He is clearly good enough and appears to have a whole new attitude to racing than he did a few years ago.

Hopper is better than runner up in BSB, i know it's swings and roundabouts but the Yamaha was the better bike this year, no doubt about it. In addition to missing cadwell via injury and his bike cutting out on the first sunday race at brands hatch.

Had it not been for these things he would have won. Now racing is racing and hill got the title and i'm pleased for hill. But, ask an experienced team manager which of the two riders he'd like? I'm sure it'd be Hopkins everytime at the moment.

I wish Suzuki would stay in for 2012 and run two bikes, but GP is an expensive race to run on an 800 that they know will run towards the back. I cant see them doing it unless they can somehow get some form of 1000cc bike ready for next year.

I hope they're on the grid though. Alvaro has improved leaps this year, and so has the bike, so it'd be nice to see them fighting again next year.

I dunno what to make of all this. If IF Suzuki do go the CRT route, I reckon it would be a bit of a shame. But I can understand the reasons,...
