Edwards extends Tech 3 MotoGP contract

Texan stays on to partner Cal Crutchlow in satellite Yamaha team

MONSTER Yamaha Tech3 MotoGP Team has secured the services of veteran racer Colin Edwards with a new one-year contract to ride for the French-based squad in the 2011 MotoGP world championship.

The 36-year-old American will be joined by British rider Cal Crutchlow in next year's Tech 3 line-up following Ben Spies' departure from the squad.

Edwards, who was earmarked for a place with the Ducati World Superbike team, has been thrown the racing lifeline after the Italian manufacturer announced they would not be running an official factory team in 2010 WSB.

Edwards made his 100th appearance for Yamaha in last weekend's inaugural Motorland Aragon MotoGP event, repaying the team's signing with an unimpressive twelfth place.

Speaking about the new contract, the former World Superbike champion admits next year's role will be more of a tutor than a race winner:

“I am delighted to have signed a new one-year contract with the Monster Yamaha Tech3 Team," said Edwards.

"I want to say a big thanks to Yamaha and to Tech3 for their unwavering support. I am honoured to continue my long and successful relationship with Yamaha, Herve Poncharal and all at Tech3. I love the team and feel like part of a big family and I'm thrilled that our adventure together is continuing next year. I'm excited at the challenge of competing in the MotoGP world championship again and still being competitive in probably the strongest field in history is an achievement I'm proud of. I am also looking forward to working with and helping out Cal Crutchlow next season. I'd like to think I helped James Toseland and Ben Spies adapt when they arrived in MotoGP, and I will be doing my utmost to do the same for Cal if he needs any advice. I think all of us can look forward to an exciting 2011 together.”

Not a shock to be honest. but he is going to get his ass kicked by his team-mate again next year.

I do not understand why Edwards is still around in Moto GP. His riding would make all of us look like slow old dogs but in the Moto GP world he is that slow old dog.

I would not be surprised if Crutchlow were to smopke him from day one.

Yeah they should bring back young Toseland, he really stormed the Motogp scene last year (not).

But at least he's back in Wsbk, that should be a doddle, winning that title again, he's even in the factory Yamaha team (which Spies rode to victory first time round) and he's really showing Cal the ropes (being 2 time Wsbk champ) or not. "oy Cal watch me flip this bike again"

On topic though, maybe they should paint #52 on the back of Spies, it certainly spurred on Edwards last year, beating his "younger" and "more" talented team mate hands down.

It doesn't make any sense?

Perennial under-achiever Edwards must have something on Poncheral, maybe some photos of him in a compromising position?

He's obviously happy to make up the numbers in MotoGP rather than going back to SBK and showing them all how it's done, like James Toseland has.

Oh, wait ....

Edward's only focus is to sandbag around collecting a paycheck.  He doesn't want to win races (he's been in GP for 6 years and never won, only 3rd place 3 times I think), he just wants to take his family on expensive vacations.  That's why he doesn't even compete (wouldn't want to duff himself up).  I don't know why they don't open up his place to a younger, hungrier rider.  He doesn't even care about racing.

I dunno what to make of all this. If IF Suzuki do go the CRT route, I reckon it would be a bit of a shame. But I can understand the reasons,...
