Ant West loses MotoGP ride

West priced out of racing due to a lack of funds

IN a statement on his Facebook page Anthony West has announced that he cannot afford to pay for his place within a MotoGP team and he may be priced out of racing altogether.

West was expected to ride for the Speed Master team on an Aprilia CRT machine, but has said he may be forced into retirement and will head back to Australia to 'find a normal job'.

The statement on his official Facebook page reads:

"I (ANTHONY WEST) will not race in moto gp this year or any other race because I can not find sponsorship to pay the SPEED MASTER team, Because all teams are asking for money from the riders only the rich can race in motogp / moto2 / moto3, I can not even afford to ride a year for free, As i have YET to be payed from my former team MZ Germany Moto2 team. I had my car mx bike and my house for sale trying to keep the ride and even gave the house as a guarantee if I did not find the money but was not enough. I will most likely not race any more and will retune back to australia to find a normal job. Sorry to my fans."

Mattia Pasini has been linked to replacing West in the Speed Master outfit.

Fatal news. I actually feared this given his ad in newspapers asking for sponsorship. It is a sad fact though, racing is for the rich, unless you're really lucky and cut it like Stoner did. West I believe has suffered from very poor management his whole career, being the reason he never secured good rides, and a few poor decisions, i.e., the one not to take the supersport ride where he would have arguably won the series with yamaha, but opted to go the Kwaka dog in GP. Shame, becuase that guy can really ride, missed his peak, but he can ride no doubt about it.

Dorna needs to step in with rules and rulings to resolve this idiotic situation where talented riders can't compete unless they are also successful businessmen. (Oh, and Ron Paul, STFU. "Free market capitalism" is not going to fix this -- it caused it.)

If the MZ Germany Moto2 team has not paid Ant West, then they should not be permitted to compete until they do. Period.

No team should be allowed to demand that riders bring their own sponsors or otherwise pay to ride.

The team's sponsors should advertise on the bike and the rider's sponsors should advertise on the leathers and helmets. The rider should keep all of his sponsorship money and the team should keep theirs.

Spot on fred. It totally sucks, and I cant believe that's the way it is. Dorna should definitely remedy this situation.

Its possibly always been this way which is the only respite I can find, but it shouldnt be. Your weekend race club, fine, richer folk have the faster bike, but in world class sport it should be a total meritocracy, otherwise it becomes a pretty boy club. The best will still get there, but they shoudl be surrounded by teh second best, not boys with rich daddies and connections
