SPAIN'S Joan Barreda took victory in the third stage of the Dakar yesterday, securing a 10-minute lead over Britain’s Sam Sunderland, in second place.

Barreda, lead rider for the Monster Energy Honda team, took the 15th stage win of his Dakar career and regained the overall classification lead after losing time on day two.

The first stage in which navigation is crucial played to the Spanish rider’s advantage and a faultless performance on his Honda CRF450 Rally saw him take a 10-minute and 20-second lead over Red Bull KTM’s Sunderland.

Barreda (pictured) said: “It was a tough day, as I had to push really hard all day, stay really focused, not make any mistakes and give 100% in the area of navigation at the beginning.

“It went really well and error-free with a very fast pace.”

Fellow Honda rider Paulo Goncalves finshed fifth in the stage and third overall, while KTM’s Toby Price, the reigning champion, lost time to finish ninth in the stage and overall fifth.

Price said: “The first part of the roadbook was definitely tricky and we all got a little bit out of whack there and a little bit lost. We definitely lost a bit of time but there's still a long way to go – we're only three days in. Give it time."

Today’s stage, climbing to 3,500 metres and tackling sand dunes, is a test test of competitors’ endurance as much as their navigation skills.
