ZZR1400. 'Only' 197bhp

Official power figure revealed

by Visordown News

Kawasaki's 2012 ZZR1400 makes 'only' 197bhp according to the firm's official figures, which were not included in the extensive press information but have since been published on the company's own website.

The actual numbers are 197bhp (200PS) at 10,000rpm and 120lbft of torque at 7500rpm. Of course, that's a lot, but it's only 10bhp up on the outgoing version of the bike, and rather at odds with the power graphs released in the firm's press information, which seemed to show a much larger percentage increase.

Add in the ram air effect at speed, and Kawasaki claims the bike will breach the 200bhp mark, hitting 207bhp.

The power figures are identical to those for the ZX-10R – 197bhp without ram air and 207bhp with it – although the bigger bike's torque is rather higher.

Are manufacturers really just a bit shy to be the first to make a real 200bhp-plus production bike?

I think you hit the nail on the head there. It’s the fear of the 200mph/200bhp millstones that’s inhibited the development the hypersport class of bikes (Busa/ZZR14) since the original Hyabusa 200mph press panic back in the late 90’s. Since then they’ve pretty much stood still in performance terms, whilst simultaneously gaining considerable mass; while the one litre superbikes have caught up in terms of speed and power and become lighter to boot.

It must be rapidly approaching adapt or die time, where they either become full fledged regular lardy sports tourers, or bit the bullet, break that 200/200 barrier, and regain their high performance credentials.

Turbo Hayabusa
Who cares?

Buy an old Hayabusa and fit that bike with an McXpress turbo-kit and you blow this crap bike from your mind... ;0)

So what? 197bhp......207bhp.......... just sodding figures on a bit of paper. The only people who will be impressed with those sort of numbers are the young lads down the chip shop discussing who makes the fastest bike. Way back in 1975 I bought a brand new Z1 and it prodiced something like 80 bph [I think?] it would do 130mph if I lay flat on the tank but really, tbh......200bhp or whatever......... who the hell need all that much power on roads far more congested than they were back in 1975 to say nothing of all the sodding speed cameras we now have to contend with. If I had the money and the choice between a brand new ZZR1400 or a totally imaculate Z1 my money would be on the Z1 every time.

I dunno what to make of all this. If IF Suzuki do go the CRT route, I reckon it would be a bit of a shame. But I can understand the reasons,...
