Leaked documents list ‘MTN250’ for production in 2015
IT wasn’t long ago that Yamaha’s range was looking a bit lacklustre and uninspired but in just a year or so it’s been transformed with machines like the MT-09, MT-07 and MT-125, the new R3 and – soon – a new R1 and FJ-09 tourer.
Chuck in a couple of curveballs like the reintroduced SR400 and the revamped XJR1300, plus the MT spin-offs like the Street Rally, Sport Tracker and Moto Cage and suddenly there are a lot of good reasons to be visiting a Yamaha dealer. And shortly there will be another one, as leaked documents in Indonesia – where some of Yamaha’s production facilities are based – seem to reveal they will be producing a machine codenamed ‘MTN250’ from the middle of next year.
Given that the same factory also makes the R25 (and, probably, the European market R3 that’s identical in every respect apart from its extra capacity) it seems certain that the MTN250 will be an MT-25 naked bike built around the same chassis and engine. Yamaha has already turned the R125 into the MT-125, so doing the same to the R25/R3 is a no-brainer.
While the bike is likely to make it over here after its launch, it’s not clear whether it will stick with the 250cc engine or get the 321cc version that’s used in the R3. In which case, there’s another question over its final name – MT-25 or MT-250 would make sense for a 250cc version, but MT-03 has already been used (although the old 660cc single with that title was discontinued at the end of 2013.) Perhaps they could use MT-320, in line with the MT-125’s designation?
