Vespa goes electric

Vespa ‘Elettrica’ to reach showrooms next year

Vespa goes electric

VESPA had a surprise in store at last week’s Eicma show in Milan in the shape of this new electric offering.

Called the Elettrica (and pictured above), Vespa says it will be a ‘true Vespa, bringing the very latest in electric technology to a vehicle that will retain all the features that have been vital to its success’.

The Italian scooter maker added: ‘The style, agility, ease of use and riding pleasure will be the same as the Vespa we have always known, with the addition of technological and innovative connectivity solutions.’

It was unveiled as a ‘concept’ but Vespa says the final version is scheduled to go on sale in the second half of 2017.

The Elettrica was revealed alongside the complicatedly named ‘(VESPA 946) RED’, and ‘an all-red version of the classic scooter, sales of which will go towards initiatives fighting AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria’.

It’s the result of a collaboration between Vespa's parent company Piaggio and (RED), an AIDS-fighting charity co-founded by Bono.

Vespa says that for each of the scooters sold, $150 will be donated.

Price and specifications have not been confirmed.
