Piaggio launches new Medley scooter plus updates to existing models

New Medley is joined by an updated Liberty and the anniversary edition Vespa 70

PIAGGIO has just announced a new model for 2016 – the Medley scooter, which will join an updated Liberty scooter and a special edition Vespa 70.

Medley

The Medley is all-new for 2016 and will be available with Piaggio’s new liquid-cooled iGet engine, in either 125cc or 150cc capacity. The Medley will feature a start/stop system and Piaggio claims the engine has ‘reduced fuel consumption and service intervals’, but it's not clear whether that’s compared to its own models or competitors’ bikes.

Piaggio says the Medley has been designed ‘with great attention to detail and finishings, as well as to perfect ergonomics and convenient use.’ It’s got daytime running lights with ‘light guide’ technology (whatever that means), plus digital instrumentation, ABS and an immobilizer.

Piaggio says it’s paid special attention to making the bike as comfortable as possible for riders of all shapes and sizes by giving the bike a low seat. Storage capacity is generous – we’re told the underseat compartment can take two flip-up helmets because the fuel tank is under the footboards.

There are no prices available at the time of writing.

Liberty

Piaggio is relaunching its Liberty scooter for 2016, and adding a 150cc model to the existing 125cc and 50cc Libertys. The bike will also be powered by the firm’s new iGet engine.

Visually, the new Liberty looks like a refined and evolved version of the outgoing model. Piaggio says the design is completely new and includes new digital instrumentation and a headlight unit with daytime running lights. It says the helmet compartment has been made more spacious and can take an open face helmet.

The front wheel has increased in size to 16 inches and the Liberty gets ABS for the first time – it’ll be standard on the 125cc and 150cc models.

There will also be a range of accessories available, the most interesting of which is a remote control built into the key to flash the bike’s light, making it easy to locate. Useful if you live somewhere with a high concentration of Liberty scoots.

The new Liberty will be on sale as soon as Eicma is over, but at the time of writing, there are no prices available.

Vespa 70

The Vespa 70 is a series of special editions celebrating the upcoming 70th anniversary of the Vespa.

The PX, Primavera and GTX Vespas will all be available with a Vespa 70 package, which means they’ll get a special ‘Azzuro 70’ colour scheme, special paintwork on the wheels, and a logo on the side. Vespa 70 editions will also get an identification plate, dark brown saddle that includes the Vespa 70 logo and a bag-top box as standard.

There are no prices available at the time of writing.
