KTM has unveiled a new zero-emission electric scooter, the "E-Speed", at the Tokyo Motorcycle Show.
Based on the same technology which powers the recent Freeride E, the concept E-Speed is aimed squarely at adjusting KTM's electric offering to the urban commuter market.
KTM claim that the striking-looking E-Speed is a sporty runner, and the power figures support this - the prototype produces 11 KW and can reach speeds of up to 50mph. The motor is liquid-cooled and 'permanent-magnet synchronous' and produces 26 lb-ft of maximum torque. The E-Speed is belt driven.
Electricity is stored in lithium-ion batteries with a capacity of 4.36kWh - supposedly, they are fully charged within two hours from a regular power socket.
The Austrians are also keen to point out their 'state-of-the-art hybrid steel trellis frame' and WP suspension elements, which are intended to enhance the performance of the E-Speed beyond that of a regular around-town scooter - another attempt to promote the machine's sporting credentials.
Stefan Pierer, CEO of KTM, said: 'We at KTM are completely convinced of electric mobility as a perfect complement to conventional powertrains. In the long term, the electric drive will come out on top for short distances – particularly in areas which are highly sensitive from an environmental perspective, like open nature and densely populated metropolitan areas!
'Vehicles like the ‘E- SPEED’ and FREERIDE E can help powered two-wheelers win back more acceptance in society. Not just because of their environmental credits, but because they are easy to use, quick, and simply great fun.'
No prices or confirmed date of release yet for this groovy-looking machine and going on the fact the Freeride E is still not for sale, we wonder whether we'll ever get to see this in a KTM dealership.
