Kawasaki W800 'classic' revealed

New 800cc parallel-twin set to take on Triumph in 2011

SAY HELLO to the 2011 Kawasaki W800 - a parallel-twin engined classic bike clone set to replace the company's now defunct W650.

The new 800cc machine is set to go head-to-head with the Triumph Bonneville 865 in the replica classic market, with a retail price rumoured to compete with the Bonneville's £5,899 price tag.

In line with the new bike's 150cc hike over the old W650, Kawasaki's new W800 will produce more power, too. It's estimated the parallel-twin will produce around 70bhp.

One area Kawasaki trumps the Bonnie is in the exhaust pipes and silencers.

Lovely curves to the headers and the pipes / silencers go straight with no kink which is what buggers up the Bonnie's retro looks.

Still has the wrong name on the gas (petrol) tank....

At least now they clearly show what brand it is with the big  tank logo. They tried to make the earlier one  look like a clone of the Triumph by copying the tank badge, style and hiding the name Kawasaki. These engines are fantastic and bikes proved  totaly reliable. They should have been proud to display the Kawasaki badge right from the get go on the first 650 model.

I really like the look of that. I'd love it if these retro bikes would move into the 80s, dump the 70s spoked wheels and tubed tyre deathtraps and add a hint of muscle bike character.

SCBonnev - Still has the wrong name on the gas (petrol) tank....

Grow up...it makes me laugh that this is the fall-back position of a lot of bonnie owners. I suppose when you compare the w650 and the bonneville (old or new) you can only conclude that the Japanese made a better bike. At which point the its-got-the-wrong-badge argument gets pulled out.

D- must try harder

And don't forget that Kawasaki were making 650 twins back in the 60's.

"...and that was a copy of the bsa a10"No, it was a built-under-licence A10 made by Meguro, who were taken over by Kawasaki.

Sorry dudes, but this is a fake. Pretty sure of that : I did it for the french website Moto-Station.

Good news are that Kawasaki confirmed the W800 will  be a 2011 model, schedulded for Milan or Intermot

I think the W stands for "won't leak"....!

All I need to know is, will it handle like a Honda step-thru with knackered suspension like so many vintage bikes, or has good handling somehow been designed into it?There were sound engineering reasons for dropping twin rear shocks, 1/2 inch frame tubing and 3 inch knobbly tyres on sports bikes!

Heres the real deal. Kawi dropped the ball. If as reported the bike will be 1,500 less than the Thruxton, then they should have taken that $ and upgraded the suspension, h.p. and style. Imagine the interest in a bike that costs the same as the Thruxton, but could be used in a all around fashion, instead of what most the mags are saying, "It's a nice city bike".

1. The tank is too small, should be better proportioned to flow with the rest of the bike.

2. If Aprilia and Ducati can get thier bikes threw E.P.A. Kawasaki shouldn't have a problem.

3. Yes we like retro bikes, That handle, and have real world power.

No, they didn't need to give it 150 h.p. or Ohlin suspension, but they could have bumped the compression a tad, say 80-85 h.p. would be just about perfect. A decent suspension and maybe a four gallon tank to meet the demensions of the rest of the bike, also seamed tanks are just hidious. Some of you computer geeks could probably put my ideas into a pic. It has to be better than what we are getting now.

Think of the improvements most guys can make to thier bikes for 1,500, and that's at retail. Most of the guys I know that ride early bikes have upgraded them, with suspension and h.p. products. I know a guy with an SRX6 with ninja suspension and he gives the litre bikes a fit in the canyons.

Kawasaki had a chance to kick Triumphs butt, and totaly missed the mark. Yes a bunch of these will sell and become an underground classic, but it could have been a sensation, like the H-D 1200 was huge in Europe, not so much here because of price to h.p. views in America.

Kawasaki brings this bike with a more proportioned tank, real suspension, and 80+ h.p. and you have a real bike for a wider array of riders, add bags and a decent windscreen and you have a great all around bike for those that can't afford multiple bikes to fill thier needs..... Listen to riders or continue to keep playing catch up with the others... In business, sales are everything, filling little niches, is good for collectors, but not the company as a whole. Come out with that kind of bike, and I'll sell my Aprilia, Harley and my Yamaha and drop all the $ on that. Not this wimpy wannabe excuse for a standard.

I dunno what to make of all this. If IF Suzuki do go the CRT route, I reckon it would be a bit of a shame. But I can understand the reasons,...
