First Look: 2011 Honda VTR250

Will UK novices finally get the bike they've been waiting for?

SAY HELLO to the 2011 Honda VTR250 - a naked, learner friendly machine ideal for restricted licence holders.

The 250cc four-stroke V-twin's destined, at the moment, for European shores only in 2011 with an estimated price tag of just over £4,000.

The liquid-cooled Honda tips the scales at just 161kg and has a seat height of 775mm, which should make it ideal for newcomers wanting a light bike that's not too tall.

And that's good news, because at 29.9bhp the Honda conveniently falls into the sub-33bhp category, making it legal for restricted licence holders.

We first looked at the little VTR in 2009. Honda didn't import it then and they don't look as though they're going to bother in 2011.

We're waiting for Honda UK to get back to us over whether they have plans to bring the bike into the country.

2011 Honda VTR250 specs:

Type V-twin 90° liquid-cooled 4-stroke
Layout DOHC
Displacement 250cc
Power 29.9 hp at 10,500 rpm
Torque 22 Nm at 8,500 rpm
PGM-FI electronic fuel injection
Tubular steel chassis
41mm telescopic fork
Rear Monoshock with adjustable preload/damping
Front tyre 110/70-17
Rear 140/70-17
Seat height 775 mm
Wheelbase 1405 mm
Front two-piston caliper 220mm Disc
Fuel capacity 12.4 litres
Dry weight 161 kg
Colours white, red, black
Price approx €4.839,00 euros

I wonder if this engine is as good as the Kymco Venox engine. The specs are very similar.

Interesting lil Bike.

But the PRICE!! that's unbelivable, Double the cc's and DOUBLE the price of the Honda 125.

Then you need to ADD in the ridiculous VAT?

KY comes with every purchase? it should.

I like the idea; a sub 33bhp bike that's perfect for learners straight out of the box. But how many people do you know that have got into bikes after seeing a bike like this? Not many, I bet.

I could count on the fingers of one hand the people I know who've done their bike test and not bought a sportsbike of some sharpe of form, from a ratty 400 to a new R6 on finance.

This kind of bike doesn't convert people into biking, but for those of us who are bikers, we look at it and say: "Yep, sensible, ideal to learn on, easy to insure - perfect!"

If they made a VTR250 that looked something like an SP1, I bet it would sell in the hundreds. Just look at the YZF-R125 and CBR125 before that. At the moment it's just Kawasaki pushing a 250 sportsbike in a market that hasn't been defined and no-one understands..

Nice bike but needs to be around the £3200 price point. Would a a good starter tool but could do with a couple more BHP's to get it just under the 33 limit

Lovely bike... I asked Honda about it last year but got no reply.  I just wish we had more choice of middleweight bikes in the UK. Things areCRAZY right now.. I've had lots of big bikes, such as VTR1000 and ZRX1200, but currently spend my time on an old VFR,or riding my scoot. Sorry, but Honda just won't get me to part with £12k for a new VFR1200, especially with the state of the roads around here, and my pocket!!! .... but I might just part with £4k-£6k for a fun middleweight... especially one that looked as nice as this.

Not every one wants to be Rossi. Race bikes, great for the track a compromise for the road. Why everybody with sports bikes hates having some thing that can happily go at the speed limit with a bit to spare is always a bore to me. The words (grow up) sometime, thats if you all get to live that long. High speed does not mean a better biker. We should be talking about the freedom that biking can bring to non bikers-new bikers, not its all about speed, speed, speed. Why honda and the rest don't offer more 250 style bikes is a shame. As big bikes have not improved on m.p.g for 25 years yet b.h.p is allowed to keep rising. Maybe there should be a link, no rise in b.h.p unless you can improve m.p.g. first. Bring the VTR 250 to the UK.

I want this bike!!! Just passed my test.... dont want a ninja250... CBF250 is too much like my 125... but this is perfect. It isnt a silly price either (compared to the yamaha wr250 or even the honda varadero 125). =D

Was lucky enough to be able to buy this bike 11 months ago from new........great little bike, perfect for me, fun to ride, great to handle....... just the right weight and height........everything I was looking for in a bike.

Am now totally gutted as had it stolen this week   .......After getting over the shock and yeah the air was blue  I have been trawling the internet trying to find another....WHY are Honda not importing more of these brilliant little bikes!!! Will be  sooooooooooooooo sad  if I dont get mine back or another one....
